Big V Weekly Wrap Round 15

Big V 300

A of bit of a strange weekend in Round 15 of Big V - firstly, it was a single game for each team across the weekend, which has not happened for a while.

And secondly, while all our teams need to keep winning as they position for finals, in theory all teams had winnable games against opponents below them on the ladder ... and that's how it transpired for both our Youth teams and our Champ Women ... but our Champ Men had a shocker in going down to Eltham.

Here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

At this point of the season for our Youth Women, the mission is just to keep winning in the lead up to finals.

And that's how is was this round, as the girls comfortably accounted for the Hawthorn Magic 81 - 55. The Boomers were just too polished for the Magic early in the game, winning the first three quarters before easing down in the last.

Bridgett O'Neill had a cracker against her old team, leading the sheet with 18 points and 8 boards. Great support from Kara Tessari with 16 points and Danni Calvisi with 15 points.

With this result, the girls have locked down second position in their pool to earn a first up home final in a few weeks time - well done to the girls and coaching staff. The last couple of regular season games now become about tuning up for a big run in the finals.

Youth Championship Men

Our Youth Men have also regained some form and were looking to keep the run going against the Waverley Falcons.

After shooting out of the blocks to lead early, the Boomers got the wobbles in the second period as the Falcons fought back to be in it at half time. But the boys regained composure in the second half and ran away with it to win 102 - 75.

Ernst Kruger had his best game of the season with a huge double double of 26 points and 10 boards, with support from the point guard duo of Richard Oryem (20 points) and Harry Fayle (18 points).

The boys cling on to second position on their table, so a couple of critical rounds coming up if they are to earn the home final.

State Championship Women

Bit of a turn up and play game for our Champ Women as Sherbrooke unfortunately are out of their league in this competition.

The girls won easily 89 - 27 ... Tennille Nash had a night out with 26 points while Amelia Smith and Talyor Hall chipped in with 12 points each.

The girls can't fall out of fifth position and look destined for an elimination final matchup against Waverley in the first week of finals. The only question will be the venue, which depends on results in the final two rounds.

State Championship Men

In short, the boys had a shocker, soundly beaten by arch rival Eltham 63 - 100. The Wildcats pretty much shot the lights out, while all the guns for the Boomers struggled.

Scotty Cuffe had 14 points and Liam Norton 11 points, while KGG and Darryl McDonald managed 10 each.

The Boomers are hanging on to sixth position on the table and will probably not fall out of the finals race, but for Coach Ben Draper it will be about building form and momentum leading into the finals.

Bit of a strange one next weekend - only two games at EDSC, with both our Youth Men and Champ Men taking on the Sherbrook Suns, but the youth boys are 7pm on Saturday night while the men are 1pm on Sunday. Both teams will be desperate for the win, so get on out and support our Big V Boomers.
