Big V Weekly Wrap Finals Week 1

Big V 300

A huge weekend for our Youth Championship teams as their finals series kicked off for season 2015.

A cracking game on Sunday at EDSC as our Youth Women outlasted the Ballarat Rush in a tight and tough elimination final to advance to the final four. A tough loss for our Youth Men in going down to the Knox Raiders in their elimination final.

The State Championship competition had their final regular season games, with both our teams securing a finals berth for their series starting next weekend.

Youth Championship Women

Every game in a finals series is tough and our Youth Women had their work cut out in a tight elimination final against the Ballarat Rush.

Both teams came out hard in a free flowing game with scores level at quarter time. The Boomers were finding ways to score but Ballarat were also executing well to keep pace. In the middle of the second quarter the girls hit a purple patch with some great offensive execution to grab a narrow 6 point lead at half time.

Into the third quarter, both teams upped the defensive effort and the scoring dried up somewhat. But a clutch trey from Keira Rowe put the Boomers lead out to 11 and the girls had almost done enough. The Rush had one last crack in the final quarter and narrowed the lead to 6, but the foul count told in the end and the Boomers iced the game from the line to run out deserving winners 85 - 76.

Bridget O'Neill had a monster game with a big double double of 17 points and 12 boards, while Emma Pearce was strong with 16 points and 12 boards. Kiera Rowe made some big baskets and finished with 16 points.

A great win for the girls and they advance to the final four - with all elimination finals going the way of the top teams, it will be tough assignment for the Boomers next week in an away game.

Youth Championship Men

Our Youth Championship Men have had a great season but just run into trouble with injuries late in the season.

In a tough elimination fixture, the boys battled hard against the Knox Raiders but just did not have the firepower or shooting touch to seriously challenge their opponents. The Boomers matched Knox for creating scoring opportunities, but the field goal percentages were just not quite high enough to put pressure on the Raiders.

Young Harry Fayle was outstanding with 16 points, while Ernst Kruger work hard for 10 points and 14 boards. It was just not to be for the Boomers in this game, but the boys should hold their heads high for a pretty good seaon overall.

State Championship Women

Our Champ Women just needed to beat the Warrandyte Venom to guarantee a home elimination final next week - and the girls took care of business with a convincing 78 - 64 win.

Loz Pearce led the sheet with 20 points and 6 boards, while Taylor Hall chimed in with 18 points. Gabby Tarabolsi worked hard at both ends for 13 boards.

This win will earn the Boomers a home elimination final against the Waverley Falcons next weekend - game details to be confirmed.

State Championship Men

Our Champ Men had already secured their finals spot, so the last game against the highly rated Ringwood Hawks was really just a finals tuneup for both teams.

The Boomers fought hard in the first half to keep pace with the Hawks, but Ringwood's firepower took control in the second half and the boys went down 81 - 109. Scotty Cuffe had a big game with 26 points, while Liam Norton chipped in with 16, while Jimmy Todd and KGG had 15 points each.

The Boomers will face a tough away elimination final next week, but finals are a whole new ball game and the boys can only have a crack and see what happens.

So we're down to three for next weekend - game times will be posted once fixtures are announced early in the week.
