Boomer Juniors Nail 4 VJBL Titles

It was a massive night of basketball at Dandenong and the State Center on Friday night as Grand Final night produced some stunning results for our Boomers Junior Championship teams.

From six Grand Finals, the Boomers came away with four Victorian Championship titles in a fabulous night for our Club.

What a great end to a big season of VJBL basketball, a huge congratulations to all our Grand Final teams and their coaches.

Here's a brief wrap of all Grand Final results.

U12-1 Girls - Bulleen 51 def Hawthorn 31

The Hawthorn Magic had knocked off raging favourite Knox in a preliminary final last week, so this one was expected to be a very even contest.

But from the first tip off, the girls shot out of the gate with some great execution and shooting to have 9 points on the board and forcing the Magic into an early time out. Hawthorn did steady but the Boomers held a comfortable double digit lead through most of the game and extended further late the game for a convincing win.

A very impressive win by a very excited group of girls at the final buzzer - well done girls and a special congratulations to Coach Liv Frost on her first VJBL title as a coach.

U12-1 Boys - Bulleen 61 def Hawthorn 39

This one was also expected to be a tight contest as it was the top two teams from the regular season battling it out for the title.

And this game was tight early as both teams played hard and the scores were close at half time. In the second half, the boys upped the intensity and forced the Magic into a number of turnovers, while executing well at the offsensive end.

In the end, the Boomers were too strong and ran away for a convincing win. Another big win for a group of boys just starting out their junior careers, well done. And a couple of great coaches in the Tomat brothers to guide these Boomers to a VJBL title, a big thanks for Michael and David.

U14-1 Girls - Bulleen 66 def Knox 63

Well according to those at the game, this was one out of the box. Again, the two top teams took to the court in the Grand Final and it was expected to be a close tussle.

Early on it was anything but close, with the Boomers struggling offensively and Knox doing as they pleased to establish at early lead. At one point in the second quarter the girls were over 20 points down and it pretty much looked to be all over.

But there is plenty of time in a game of basketball and the girl dug deep and clawed their way back into the game to even up the scores with 7 minutes to play. From there it was tight and tense, with neither team able to get more than a basket in front. With scores locked away, the last shot from both teams missed and the game went to Overtime.

In OT it was again tight, but this time the Boomers managed to make a couple of key baskets and held on for a stunning 3 point win.

What a Grand Final, another amazing result, well done to the girls and Coach Rob Grieve. And it's not over for these girls yet, as training continues in the build up to Nationals in a couple of weeks.

U14-2 Girls (Reserve) - LaTrobe 44 def Bulleen 37

A special mention to the U14-2 girls, who had a amazing season to make the Grand Final of VC reserve. The girls fought hard all game but just game up short against LaTrobe to finish runners up.

Well done to the girls and a special thanks to coaches Angelka and Taylor for all their hard work this season.

U16-1 Boys - Dandenong 61 def Bulleen 55

The U16-1 boys have had a stunning finals series, coming from 5th on the ladder to beat three other top 8 teams and make the Grand Final. Up against a highly fancied Dandenong team, it would have been a fairiy tale finish for the boys to pull this one off.

Early on the Boomers looked shaky, as the Rangers press forced turnovers and Dandy grabbed an early 9 point lead. A Boomers timeout steadied the ship and the boys looked more poised in offence to narrow the gap to 6 points at half time.

The second half was tight and tough as neither team could break away. A couple of big threes at critical times in the third quarter helped the Boomers close to within 3 points at the last break and a big upset looked possible.

In the last quarter it was just a couple of key shots that went in and out that denied the Boomers, as Dandenong managed to close out the game in a great contest.

A great effort and the boys can hold their heads high, they never gave up and had a great season. Special mention and thanks to Coach Sam Thornton and assistant Jack.

U18-1 Girls - Bulleen 52 def Eltham 35

The U18-1 girls went into this game as raging favourites, having won pretty much everything all season, including the Classic title in June.

But Eltham were not going to go down without a fight and the game was tight for three quarters with the Wildcats staying within a few points. But with 5 minutes to play Eltham appeared to tire and a string of steals and turnovers saw the Boomers lead blow out quickly to double digits, with the girls sealing the win from the foul line in the last couple of minutes.

Another big title win for a very talented team, well done to the girls and Coach Gary Fox.
