U14 Girls Claim National Title

It was pretty much the perfect end to the 2015 Junior Championship season last week as our Under 14 girls claimed the Gold medal and national title at the U14 Girls Club Championships in Gosford NSW.

Coming off their Victorian Championship win, the Boomers were ready to play and cruised through the early pool rounds, with Coach Rob Grieve having the luxury of rotating all his players to keep the girls fresh.

The serious stuff started in the quarter finals but the Boomers were too good for Central Districts to setup a crunch semi final against local rivals the Knox Raiders. The Raiders had led the Boomers by over 20 points in the VJBL Grand Final, with the girls fighting back for a stunning overtime win.

But this time the girls were ready and controlled the game from the outset to record a convincing 55 - 35 win and advance to the gold medal game. Gemma Potter was excellent with 14 points and had great support from Erin Riley with 12 points.

In the big game up against the Manly Sea Eagles, the Boomers again played outstanding basketball with great poise and good teamwork to runout 50 - 27 winners and claim the national title. It was again Gemma and Erin leading the way with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Just an outstanding week of great team basketball, so contratulations to the girls, Coach Rob Grieve and all the other coaches and supporters who helped out for the week.

Also, a special mention to our U14 boys who travelled to Perth for the boy nationals. The Boomers played well to win their three pool games, but unfortuntately went down 47 - 73 to the Cairns Marlins in their quarter final. The boys also went down to Casey in a classification game, but bounced back in their final game to defeat the Sydney Comets 62 - 52 and finish the tournament in 7th position.

A great effort by the boys against some tough opposition, you still did us proud so well done.
