The Sunshine Coast Under 16s Club representatives had a great season opening hit out on Sunday March 9 with ten teams taking to the Maroochydore Multi-Sport Complex.
The idea of the day was to blast the off season cob webs out of the system, allow teams an opportunity to experiment before season kick-off and give the Sunshine Coast Talent Coaches the opportunity to pick an initial regional squad ahead of training for the State Championships.
Under 16 Sunshine Coast Talent Coach, Steve Moody, was most impressed with the standard of footy on the day, in some-what blustery conditions.
“It was great to see the players endeavour toward the footy and the contest though out the day and across all ten teams,” Moody said.
“Picking the final squad of 35 to 41 boys was no easy feat and the end result came at much debate from the coaching staff.
“The Under 16s Club Day provides us with great insight into players ability and we look forward to training and match play over the coming weeks to narrow the squad down to the final 25 to represent the region.
“The Club Day is a big team effort and we are lucky as a region to have a very good group of people involved at our clubs.”
The squad will play an intra-club game on the March 19 to make further squad reductions as the Championships draw closer.
Training kicks off on Wednesday March 12 from 5:15-7:15pm at Maroochydore Multi-Sports Complex, Fishermans Road and will continue Mondays and Wednesday evenings thereafter.
