Over the past six weeks, I have had the pleasure of delivering the AFL program Kinderkick to Green Beginnings Childcare Centre.
Green Beginnings is located bside Kawana Lake, along Sportsmans Parade and just a drop kick away from Kawana Park Eagles Junior Australian Football Club.
With two classes, Green Beginnings was the perfect environment for hosting Kinderkick with Andrew, Narelle and Sam always greeting me with a smile and accomodating the program.
Setting up each week and spotting the Kinderkickers out of the corner of my eye with their faces pressed up against their classroom windows eager to come out and kick a footy is something that never grows old and makes my job worth while.
Now, a few notable Kinderkickers are worth a mention as the most chatty and most certainly hooked on AFL.
Jude...
Every week young Jude will always go through who won on the weekend, never neglecting to mention that my team (Brisbane Lions) lost.
Jude also suggested one week that I should change my team and support his team, the mighty Port Adelaide Power.
Lachy...
Little Lachy asked
"Do you know who beat the swans?"
"Yes, Collingwood,"
With a disappointed look on his face he then points out that it is a beautiful day to avoid the further conversation about his beloved Sydney Swans being defeated.
Lachy also suggested that one of our activities should be an AFL game with tackling, like on the TV...
Maybe in a couple more years young man!
Kinderkick is a great program for the children to burn off some extra energy that they always seem to have, it teaches them motor skills that improve their balance, coordination, fitness and of course, teaches them AFL skills.
Each week is something different, whether it's being turtles with a shell (beanbag) on their back, crawling through a tunnel, or stomping over green feet like dinosaurs.
On the final session the Green Beginnings Kinderkickers got a special surprise with AFL Sunshine Coast Development Coordinator, Rohan Briggs (Briggsey) and AFL Sunshine Coast Trainee Development Officer, Shannon Campbell joining in.
The children completed a huge obstacle course where everything they had done over the previous six weeks was combined into one big course.
The Kinderkickers ran and weaved through cones, balanced on ropes, jumped over a ladder and crawled through the tunnel balancing beanbags like tiny turtles.
Even Briggsy had a go at the tunnel which the children had a little giggle at!
Concluding the session all Kinderkickers received their very own soft touch AFL football along with a certificate and some Brisbane Lions give aways.
The Kinderkickers at Green Beginnings are a pleasure to teach and I have been lucky enough to continue Kinderkick for another six weeks with even more children eager to sign up.
It is great to know that I leave the children with a big smile on their face after each lesson and with a hunger for AFL.
