NOOSA coach James Gellie last week labelled Mayne the favourite for their top-of-the-table clash at Noosaville, but that didn't stop the hurt after his team let slip a golden opportunity yesterday.
Both teams went into the QFA North round six boasting unbeaten 5-0 records but in the lead-up to the encounter, Gellie was quick to earmark the other "Tigers" as the team to beat.
But it was his side that h got the upper hand when it surged to a 6.3 (39) to 5.1 (31) lead at half-time.
Noosa also led by six points at the last change but ultimately lost by 32 points, 15.7 (97) to 10.5 (65), after a fourth quarter flourish from the visitor.
"I think the work we put in during the first half gave us a chance to set ourselves up in the second half so it was probably our game to lose," Gellie conceded.
"To Mayne's credit they came out and hurt us around the stoppages and worked harder around the outside and we were found wanting at times.
"They came out after half-time and put pressure on us like we did to them in the first half and they were able to hold the momentum for longer.
"We're obviously disappointed but we'll keep moving forward and keep getting better at what we're trying to do."
Gellie reinforced his view that Mayne was the benchmark in the revamped northern south-east Queensland competition.
"And we know where we're at now and we know where we've got to get to.
"They (Mayne) are the yardstick and we've got to get better, put a few things in place and make sure we're really working hard to improve."
Mayne's Luke Faulkner bagged seven goals in the match and Isaac Hughson snared three for the host.
In other games, Maroochydore thrashed local rival Nambour & Hinterland 19.12 (126) to 6.5 (41) at Palmwoods.
Frederick Beytell snared five goals as the Roos produced a sharp display to remind Mayne and Noosa of its potential.
Caloundra thumped Aspley 18.17 (125) to 8.11 (59) to win its third game in six outings while Caboolture could manage only three points in a 160-point drubbing by Kedron.
