After three weeks of training for the Under 14 Sunshine Coast Talent Program boys, it was time for an intra-squad practise match to narrow the squad further in readiness for the State Championships.
The skies began to close in across the Coast as the match approached and down came a steady afternoon / evening deluge of rain, making for tough conditions to play high quality footy.
The rains were not going to stop proceedings as the coaches were on a mission and with Wide Bay only available on Wednesday’s and next week near ten boys away with State School boy duties it was time to just play footy.
Conditions obviously made it tough but all 46 boys were out to impress and that they did with some great displays of clean pick-ups and accurate kicking with a wet footy.
The coaching staff worked hard to give all fair opportunity to shine and judging by the later debate around the selection table it was hard to trim back to a desired 30.
In fact in the end we just settled on 32 and will see who from here really wants it.
Having being around Sunshine Coast representative footy for a long time now, I do really feel that the depth of talent and endeavour across this squad is at a the highest level witnessed to date.
Some players can consider themselves unlucky but the fact is, we just have to get to the carnival team number of 25 and from this moment and over the coming three weeks another seven boys will also consider themselves unlucky.
From there those unlucky few boys, will have further representative opportunity to strive for in the Sunshine Coast Under 15 School boys and of course, Under 16 Sunshine Coast Talent Academy in 2016.
I have said it a number of times that a Sunshine Coast Under 16 team has some 50 percent new faces to that of two years earlier in the Under 14s so continue to listen to your coaches, work hard on your game at training and on match day and the door to future opportunities may well be open.
For the squad, now narrowed down continue to listen and evolve as your job is not finished, in fact it is now very much just starting, the coming weeks will set the foundation to how you approach the Championships.
From here the squad will be trimmed back to 27 in preparation for the first practice match on Wednesday June 11 verse Brisbane North at Burpengary.
Then on Wednesday June 18 our final 25 will play a second practice match verse Moreton Bay at Fishermans Road, Maroochydore.
The State Championships will be held at Burpengary in the first week of the June / July school holidays.
Training will continue to start at 5pm with a likely finish around 6.45pm on both Monday and Wednesday’s.
The Wide Bay boys will continue to just join us on Wednesday’s with the squad members continuing to train with the Wide Bay Lions Academy on Monday’s.
Expectation is that all boys will be in attendance at those times as stated above.
If injured, you will still be required to attend training and see our Sports Medic, Tori Malthouse and Program Coordinator, Steve Hadlow so they can monitor your injury and work through rehabilitation.
Thank you to all boys who took opportunity from the Gympie trial day and through the past three weeks for your commitment to the program.
We wish you all the best for the remainder of this club season.
To those who missed out, you are most welcome to come down one Monday or Wednesday evening and speak to the coaching staff to see where you can further develop your skills.
The off season will again present opportunity for some AFLQ Summer Development Training giving you a sound head start into next season – further information to that we will post in September.
