Sunshine Coast Umpire Ben Moller has been named the 'Best Field Umpire' under the age of 15 at the recent Under 15 State School Boys Championships at Morningside.
Moller’s AFL ability is not only with the whistle, Ben is a great AFL player is his own right, gaining selection to represent the U16 Sunshine Coast Talent squad at the recent State Championships.
Moller first started umpiring to give his dad a hand as he was umpiring the juniors in Wide Bay on Friday nights.
Moller believes being an umpire has helped his understanding of the game and loves being able to tell his teammates some of the more complicated rules that they do not understand.
"I prefer playing but when I can’t play I umpire just to stay involved in the sport I love," said Moller.
Moller umpired at the Under 12 National Championships in Darwin last year and has gone on to even higher honours this year.
Although Ben says he has no interest in pursuing an AFL Umpiring Career at this stage, he will see where his playing career takes him first, then re-assess.
Moller’s story truly reflects the belief that AFL players make great umpires.
Moller will now go on to represent Queensland at the National School Boys Championships in Sydney from July 19 - 26.
