Multicultural students from across the Sunshine Coast have experienced Australian Football for the first time at Nambour State School.
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program is coordinated from Nambour State High School with multicultural students from non-English backgrounds attending Nambour SS, Nambour SHS and other schools from across the Coast.
Active After-School Communities (AASC) in conjunction with AFL Queensland organised the AFL program to run for seven weeks during Term Two to expose the students to Australia’s indigenous game and allow students the opportunity to build new relationships.
AFL Sunshine Coast Regional Manager, Paul Tresise, said that the program is a great way to connect with the multicultural community.
"The CaLD (Cultural and Linguistic Diversity) Program is one of my favourite programs to be involved with because the kids are just so hungry for information and the chance to run around outside," Tresise said.
"This is the second CaLD program that I have been involved with and it really is fantastic to take our game out into new communities.
"Through this program we have a unique opportunity to build relationships with multicultural students and their families ensuring they not only understand AFL but want to be involved in sport and recreation on the Sunshine Coast."
The seven-week program concluded with an ultimate Kids Vs Parents game with the parents team consisting of AFL Sunshine Coast Staff, AASC staff and a couple of token parents who were invited to attend the final session.
The final game was a one-sided affair with the kids stringing together all of the AFL skills that they had learnt throughout the program.
Joost, Leo, John-Rev, and Ico were dominant in the mid field with Emi, Una, Jasleen and Rosy racking up the possessions across half-back and in the forward line.
It was great to have so many parents participating in the game and watching on the sideline with many of them experiencing AFL for the first time.
