The AFL Sunshine Coast Under 17’s Youth Girls program started on Monday with 25 girls turning out for the first training session of a busy ten week program.
Coach Stuart Jackson was beaming with the start to the program, he said “I am most pleased with the turn out on night one, having also heard from a number of girls who couldn’t attend this week we are going to be in for a strong program and final selection process”.
AFLQ Sunshine Coast invites all female footballers and non-AFL female athletes who are born between 1997 and 2001 to join the 2014 Suncoast Storm program with a view to the region fielding a strong team for the October 24th to 27th State Championships.
The Storm finished runner-up at the 2013 AFL Queensland Under 17 State Championships and will be looking to solidify their position as a region that produces high-quality female footballers with a strong showing at the 2014 Championships.
This year, the Storm will be a standalone Sunshine Coast team after the first few years of being with Brisbane North (2012) and in 2013 having Wide Bay participants eligible for team selection. Wide Bay players will be able to represent their region in an separate team.
Coach Jackson also commented “From showings on the first night of training, there is a very committed and capable squad before us with all players eager to impress and push for final selection – it is going to be a great 10 weeks ahead!”.
With Stu, assisting is able lieutenant and team manager Casey Cubis and assistant coaches Rachel Anstey, Shannon Campbell, Rohan Briggs and it also appears the Tasmanian dynamo in Stacey French couldn’t help herself and has rolled up the sleeves to be amongst the action.
Coach Jackson also stated “It’s great to have past Storm player, Queensland representative and two time all Australian Shannon Campbell involved with the program. Her experiences fresh out of last year’s Storm program and with state honours will be fantastic for the girls to experience and learn from. Also to have women’s player and coach Rachel Anstey involved is awesome, she comes with a heap of experience at a community and state level, her passion for the game is infectious”.Training will again take place next Monday 25th August, with a 5pm on the track start time going through to 7pm at Fishermans Road. Regional Manager, Paul Tresise said “All girls within the age bracket are most welcome to attend but a word of advice that if you are serious about attaining a final team selection you best get amongst the squad action from the start as this will be our strongest and most eagerly contested AFLQ-SC program to date”.
Finally, Coach Jackson stated “Get down to training ASAP as this is going to be an exciting program and will again make significant development inroads into AFL also being seen as an exciting and inclusive sporting option for our Sunshine Coast Girls. Go Storm!”
