The Under 17 Youth Girls team finalised their preparations with a practice match at Fishermans Road in sweltering conditions over the weekend against a women’s Challengers team with players from Caboolture, Zillmere and the Coast.
With the squad to be cut to the final 23, this was the final opportunity for the girls to press their claims for selection for the State Carnival at Yeronga at the end of the month.
There was talent across the oval with state representatives and All-Australians suiting up for both teams and with plenty of opportunity for interchange, the direction to run hard was loud and clear for the Stormers.
With the challengers dominating the first half by converting their chances more effectively than the Stormers, Coach Stuart Jackson called for the girls to work harder to give the forwards more opportunities to score.
The tide turned towards the Stormers after half time with the girls turning into a hurricane of run and carry down the wings creating more chances for the forwards to put score on the board.
“I was able to learn a bit more about how the girls reacted under pressure,” said Jackson after the game.
“We’ll select our leadership group in the next few days so it was good to see some leaders emerge in the game.”
With the first game of the championships on Thursday next week at North Burpengary, the #stormwarning is current and deadly.
The Sunshine Coast Youth Girls under 17 team the “Storm” will play their first State Championships game on Thursday 16th October, 6.30pm @ the Burpengary AFL facility.
