Forecast for the Queensland Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships this weekend: #StormWarning
Following a dominant display in Game One against Brisbane North Brumbies at Burpengary Sports Complex the Suncoast Storm again proved they are a force to be reckoned with after finishing second at the Championships in 2013.
The Storm kept the Brumbies scoreless in the first half (4.1.25 to 0.0.0) with Captain Tahlia Randall leading the way through the mid-field with the apt assistance of Brooke Matherson, Milli Reed and Tiff Dale.
From the first bounce the Storm mid-field swamped the footy and surged forward hitting targets, engaging the half forward with Bella Freeman directing traffic and Jessee Sills and Emma Day using their pace to get the footy between the big sticks.
Head Coach, Stuart Jackson was impressed with the girls’ performance and believes they will take it to the best of the best during the remainder of the Championships this weekend.
“Despite having only played one game together prior to the Brumbies clash the girls communicated effectively and linked up fluently all over the ground,” Jackson said.
“We had some fantastic clearance work in the centre and around the ground with Randall, Reed, Matherson and Valstar (Pip) was complimented by sharp attacking up forward by Sills (Jessee), Day and Waddell (Eve).”
Not to be discounted the Storm defence stood firm for the duration of the game with Danica Bloomfield and Morgan Whitney leading the way.
Back-line Coach, Rohan Briggs said the girls really held their ground and took it upon their selves to make judgement calls and win the footy.
“It was great to see the girls put what we have been going through at training into motion, Crofty (Chelsea Crofts) and Bella (Mudronja) were outstanding and provided Whitney and Bloomfield with run and drive off the half-back line,” Briggs said.
Two plays of the night in the last quarter deserve recognition, one, with Eve Waddell storming through the corridor palming off a tackle executing a perfect delivery to the top of the square and two, Jemma Abbott owning the centre half forward line and snapping a beautiful left foot delivery to the square.
The Storm ran out winners, 7.6.48 to 1.1.7 with Jessee Sills kicking four goals, earning herself best on ground honours.
