FRATERNITY CLUB PRE-SEASON CUP FINAL – PREMIER LEAGUE

The final of the Frat Cup is on tonight with Bulli facing off against Wollongong Olympic.

Bulli who have made the most of their ‘second chance’ defeated Port Kembla in their semi-final by one goal to nil courtesy of a goal from Hayden Mowbray mid-way through the second half.

In a fairly even game, both sides had chances to win the game with Port’s best period coming in the first half with Bulli ‘keeper, Bryce Daenell pulling off a couple of stunning saves. During the second half, Bulli could have really killed the game off after they had scored with a couple of glorious opportunities going astray with forwards well placed to add to the one goal advantage.

In the second semi, Wollongong Olympic had to do it the hard way, coming from two goals down early in the game to draw level in the second half to take the game into penalties before prevailing.

The Blueys, Ricky Goodchild opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a 25 metre thunderbolt that gave Olympic Keeper, Hayden Durose, no chance in goal. On the quarter hour mark, Tarrawanna appeared to take a stranglehold on the match to lead 2-0 on the back of a Samet Kaynak penalty for a handball infringement.

Thirty minutes in, Mark Picciolini reduced the arrears with an opportunistic goal and the Blueys held a slender one goal advantage at half time. Mid-way through the second period, Olympic were back on level terms when Picciolini scored his second, also from the penalty spot after he been brought down by Tarra’s Grant Zanni.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock in regulation time and penalties were required to determine the winner.

Both sides scored with their first four kicks with well taken strikes and then it was the turn of Picciolini but after scoring one earlier in the game, this time his effort from the 11metre mark cleared the crossbar.

Up stepped Ricky Goodchild to send the Blueys into the Cup Final but unfortunately for him, Durose was up to the task and pulled off a wonderful save to keep his side in the contest. It was now down to sudden death spot kicks and when Olympic scored their sixth, the Bluey’s Ilija Prenzoski was unable to replicate his opponent’s effort and it was Olympic who went through to the final, 5-4 on pens after the 2-2 draw.

Olympic will probably go into the Final as slight favourites, given that they have been in terrific goal scoring form early in the season with 11 goals to their credit in the tournament so far. Bulli’s form in the pre-season has been patchy so say the least but if they can produce some of the wonderful attacking football that they are capable of, the game could develop into a high scoring shoot-out.

Tonight’s Final kicks off at 7.00pm at Memorial Park Corrimal.
