ILLAWARRA CREDIT UNION DISTRICT LEAGUE WRAP ROUND 10

After last week, proclaiming that Corrimal Rangers might be the Dangers in this season’s ICU District League, we have a new leader at the top of the table as Oak Flats Falcons moved top after picking up six points during the week, including the scalp of the previously undefeated Rangers.

In a spirited game at Keith Bond Oval, the Falcons swooped on the vulnerable Rangers with two late goals in three minutes to beat Corrimal two goals to nil.

The game was in the balance for much of the game but a long range goal from Stephen Jovanovski on 73 minutes after he caught the Corrimal Keeper, Jacob Madden, napping off his line provided the spur that the Falcons were looking for and the points were sealed along with a terrific victory when Nick Saravanja scored 14 minutes from time.

Oak Flats travelled to JJ Kelly Park on Wednesday night in a catch up Rd 5 game against Coniston Lions and came away with a three goals to one win.

The Falcons had to do this the hard way in coming from behind after conceding a first half goal scored by the Lion’s Nazir Mosar on 23 minutes. The visitors were back on level terms eight minutes into the second period with an equaliser from Beau Armstrong but once again left it late before confirming their superiority when Toby Napper scored the second 12 minutes from the end and Armstrong scoring his second of the match, three minutes into stoppage time.

Coniston are not enjoying the best of seasons and at present are languishing near the foot of table but they appear to be playing without much luck as they have led a number of games only to concede goals late in the game.

Another case in point was Saturday’s heart wrenching loss by two goals to one loss to Thirroul FC at Kelly Park. Cono opened the scoring through Duane Byrnes on 59 minutes and looked to heading towards a much needed morale boosting victory only to be denied at the death when Peter Lewis scored six minutes from time with substitute, Evan Fitzsimmons snatching a last gasp winner for the Thunder deep into time added on.

At Judy Masters Oval, Helensburgh Thistle’s strong start to the match against Balgownie Rangers proved to be the catalyst for their three goals to one triumph over their hosts.

The visitors were two goals to the good inside the opening 15 minutes (Jason Wellings 5’, Mitch Buchan 14’) and despite the Rangers getting back into the game when Anthony Oliver scored on the hour mark, the Burgh were able to wrap up the points with an 83rd minute clincher from Grant McDonald.

Berkeley Sports had to work hard for their three points in defeating Kemblawarra by two goals to one at Berkeley Sportsground.

The Sports opened the scoring courtesy of a 36th minute penalty from Dylan Evans but it was ‘Game On’ when Steven Ferreira equalised on 62 minutes.

Robbie Cull scored the match winning goal after 69 minutes but there was still plenty of time for both sides to get something from the game with Berkeley prevailing in a close one.

Kiama Quarriers and UOW FC were involved in an exciting tussle at the Kiama Leisure Centre before the visitors just edged out their hosts by three goals to two.

Kiama took the lead after just seven minutes (Chris Christodoulou) and then Marc Lee scored a leveller after 23 minutes.

The pivotal moment in the game came after just 25 minutes when the Kiama Keeper, Matt Kennedy was sent from the field for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity with a penalty kick being awarded to rub salt into the wound.

Scott Muilwyk scored from the spot to give the visitors the lead with the Quarriers having to play two thirds of the match, a man down.

No more goals before the interval before Lee scored his second of the match and set up the match winning lead seven minutes after the players returned to the field.

The Quarriers fought on valiantly and were rewarded when Keegan Beringer pulled a goal back with five minutes left to play but Uni were able to hang on and claim the three points.

There was a hotly contested game at Hume Oval where Picton Rangers and Shell Cove FC locked horns with the visitors continuing their strong start to the season, recording  a two goals to one victory.

Dayne Morley scored for the home side whilst Chris Jankulovski and Tom Markovski scored for the victors.

Both sides finished the game with ten men when the Picton Keeper, Bradley Jones and Jason Milosevski were involved in an incident which resulted in both players receiving their marching orders ten minutes from time.

Warilla Wanderers retained third spot on the table with a comfortable four goals to nil victory over Wests Illawarra at King Mickey Park.

The contest was really settled in the first half with a flurry of goals inside the last six minutes of the opening period with James Stewart (39’44’) and Luke Everingham(43’) getting on the score-sheet.

Cain Keating rounded off the scoring when he scored on 83 minutes.

There is sure to be a lot of juggling in table positions in the next few weeks as club play their ‘catch up’ games with Helensburgh Thistle the only side to have played their full complement of games.
