ILLAWARRA MERCURY IPL RD 11 WRAP

Match of the Week

Wollongong United 3 – 2 Port Kembla

An injury time own goal gifted Wollongong United a victory over Port Kembla at Macedonia Park on Saturday. The win moved Wollongong into 5th and if they win their game in hand they could move up as high as 3rd.

Robbie Brown opened the scoring in the 25th minute for Port Kembla and the southern suburbs club was able to hold the 1-0 lead until half time.

Wollongong weren’t able to work themselves into the match until late in the second half when the tight game gave way to a flurry of goals. Johnny Martinoski found the equaliser for United in the 70th minute before going ahead five minutes later through substitute Brian Montinari. Port were able to pull themselves back on terms when substitute Martin Castelli found the back of the net in the 88th minute. But it was undone four minutes later when Robbie Brown unfortunately directed the ball into his own goal; giving Wollongong a fortunate win.

Rest of the Round

Cringila Lions 3 – 1 Tarrawanna Blueys

A brace from Dominic Magill capped a confidence boosting 3-1 win for Cringila over Tarrawanna on Friday night at Crehan Park.

Cringila settled early and in just the 4th minute Magill grabbed the first of his double to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. They were able to hold their fast start as they took their lead into half time.

Just eight minutes after the restart the Lions found the net again when Marco Miceski was able to stretch the lead to two goals. In the 70th minute Magill scored his second and seal the win for Cringila.

A consolation for Tarrawanna through Blaise Gassin in the 71st minute did little to dampen the Lions mood as they leapfrogged the Blueys up into 7th place on the ladder.

South Coast United 3 – 1 Fernhill

South Coast United ran out comfortable 3-1 winners against Fernhill at McLennan Park on Sunday.

The Foxes started the game the brighter of the two sides but missed a couple of good opportunities early on before Tommy Skara, against the run of play, put South Coast in front  has he was able to find the back of the net in the 16th minute of the game. A Daniel Krstevski goal just before half time ensured the sides entered the break all square.

Fernhill defended well for the first part of the second half but a penalty in the 74th minute undid their hard work. Andrew Paine stepped up to put away the penalty and give United a 2-1 lead. The win was sealed just five minutes later when Jack Lombo pushed the ball into the net to complete the scoring.

Albion Park White Eagles 1 – 3 Bulli FC

Bulli picked up their sixth win on the trot as they downed Albion Park 3-1 at Terry Reserve on Saturday. New signing Dean Heffernan grabbed his first goal for the club as they confirmed their position as league leaders.

Albion Park were first on the scoresheet when Chris Smith found the back of the net in the 32nd minute. Smith’s goal was cancelled out when Heffernan netted his goal in first half stoppage time.
The equaliser was a just reward for the visitors who dominated the majority of the half but had no luck in front of goal.

It took time to break the deadlock after the restart but a quick-fire double from substitute, Cameron Littler ensured another win for Bulli. Littler had only been on the field a matter of moments when he scored the game breaker in the 74thminute and what a goal it was. Receiving the ball in a wide left position, he cut inside and has he approached centre-field, Littler let fly with his right foot from 25yds and watched the ball rifle into the back of the net with Park Keeper Adam Rodriguez no chance of getting a hand to it.
Four minutes later, the Super Sub bagged his second and the decisive third for the team to send his side home with another three valuable as Bulli reach the half-way point of the competition with a slender one point lead over the Fury at the top of the table after collecting an imposing 27 points from the 33 on offer in the first half of the Season.

Wollongong Olympic 0 – 0 Dapto Dandaloo Fury

Olympic’s up and down season continued as they held league leaders Dapto Dandaloo to a 0-0 draw at the PCYC on Saturday.

There was not a lot of goalmouth action in this one with the home side have the better of proceedings over the 90 minutes and if it was a boxing match probably shaded the contest on points but that counts for nothing in football terms with the two sides settling for a point a-piece.

The draw saw Dapto Dandaloo slip from the top of the table and one point behind Bulli.

Woonona 2 – 2 Bellambi

Bellambi showed they can play in the Illawarra’s top division as they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Woonona despite being reduced to 10 men late in the first half. You can see the full report here.

Bellambi 1 – 4 Dapto Dandaloo

In a deferred Round 3 game on the Public Holiday Monday, the Fury travelled to Elizabeth Park and came away with a comfortable victory to keep the pressure on table topping Bulli.

A strong first half showing which yielded three goals (David Hartas 22’ Joe Crowley 39’ & Brad Welch 45’) set the platform for this victory and although Nathan Sutcliffe (33’) reduced the arrears in the opening stanza Dapto Dandaloo proved to be too strong and rounded off the win with a Shaun McRae goal in the dying embers of the game.
