ILLAWARRA MERCURY PL RD 14 WRAP

Match of the Week

Dapto Dandaloo Fury 5 – 1 Bellambi Rosellas

Dapto Dandaloo opened up on Bellambi at Dandaloo Sports on Sunday as they cruised to a 5-1 win over the Rosellas. Alvin Ceccoli and Shaun McRae did most of the damage with a brace each as the Fury ran away with the game in the second half.

McRae opened the scoring in the 34th minute as both sides took time to settle into the game. An equaliser from Bellambi’s Michael Beveas, which was a terrific strike from distance, just before half time ensure the two teams went into the break on level terms.

Joseph Crowley found the back of the net, minutes after the break and gave Dapto Dandaloo a 2-1 lead that they wouldn’t let slip for the remainder of the game. McRae grabbed his second in the 75th minute before Ceccoli added his first goal just a minute later. Ceccoli wrapped up the scoring and the match with a strike in the 80th minute.

Rest of the Round

Port Kembla 2 – 1 Albion Park White Eagles

A first half brace from Matthew Floro was enough for Port Kembla to see off Albion Park Wetherall Park on Sunday.

Floro opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a long range effort to give his side a 1-0 lead. The pacey attacker added his second goal five minutes before the break to give Port a healthy two goal cushion at half time.

Albion Park came out of the blocks flying at the resumption and it was game on three minutes into the second stanza when Chris Smith got on the end on a defence splitting through ball and finished with aplomb in a one-on-one with Port Keeper David Poeira, to reduce the arrears.
Try as they might, the White Eagles couldn’t breach a stubborn Port defence a second time and the two sides played out the match with plenty of chances falling for both sides but the one goal margin proved to be enough for Port Kembla to claim the three points.

Woonona Sharks 1 – 1 Bulli FC

Woonona and Bulli played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in difficult conditions at Ocean Park on Saturday. High winds meant neither side could properly settle into the match and play their normal game with the end result becoming somewhat of a lottery under the conditions.

Bulli’s talismanic striker Ben McDonald was first to score in the 30th minute as the 2013 runners-up forged a 1-0 lead albeit against the run of play as they has struggled to get out of their own half in the opening exchanges. The score was cancelled out just minutes later, however, as Trent Worthington converted from the penalty spot to tie it up at 1-1.

The second half saw both sides try to get the best of their opponent and the conditions to no avail; with the score remaining at 1-1 until the final whistle.

Fernhill 0 – 1 Wollongong United

A second half penalty from Robbie Shields was enough to see Wollongong United prevail over Fernhill at Ray Robinson Field on Saturday.

A competitive match saw both sides with chances to score but in the end a red card to Fernhill’s Scott Regent and Shields’ penalty were enough to ensure three points for the visitors.
In the wash-up, United probably deserved all three points as they looked the team most likely to score for the majority of the game and missed a hat-full of one on one’s in the course of the game although the Foxes did hit the woodwork just prior to the winning goal being scored.

Wollongong Olympic 0 – 1 Tarrawanna Blueys

Samet Kaynak’s second half strike lifted Tarrawanna over Wollongong Olympic at the PCYC on Saturday.

The two teams played out a goalless first half as they both looked to assert their dominance over the other. Kaynak’s goal came just four minutes after the restart and a second yellow card to Olympic’s Mark Piccioloni was enough to ensure the Blueys could hold on for the win.

This was another game where the windswept conditions caused havoc and made for a couple of unusual incidents during the game.
First, Olympic had a goal ruled out when a throw in went directly into the Bluey’s goal without the ball being touched and a goal-kick being awarded and then later, the Tarra Goalkeeper, Christian Pretto was caught completely by surprise when his own goal kick reached the half way line only to see the strong wind send the ball straight back at him towards his own goal which he had to knock away and concede an indirect free-kick for touching the ball a second time.

Cringila Lions 1 – 2 South Coast United

South Coast United came from a goal down to seal a victory over Cringila at Crehan Park on Sunday. You can read the full report here.
