ILLAWARRA MERCURY IPL WRAP RD 15

Match of the Week

Fernhill 1 – 2 Tarrawanna Blueys

Tarrawanna fought back from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory over Fernhill at Ray Robinson Field on Saturday.

An early goal to Fernhill’s Daniel Krstevski (5’) put the home side 1-0 up as they took the game to the 6th placed Blueys. Tarrawanna were able to work their way into the match, however, and found an equaliser through Rick Goodchild in the 25th minute. The two teams remained locked at 1-1 entering the half time break.

The second half saw both sides searching for a goal to put them in front. The breakthrough for Tarrawanna came in the 72nd minute when Samet Kaynak found the back of the net. Fernhill were unable to find an equaliser and the Blueys came away with the three points.

Rest of the Round

Cringila Lions 0 – 1 Port Kembla

A second half strike from Daniel Aliffi was enough to see Port Kembla earn a 1-0 win over Cringila at Crehan Park on Sunday.

A fiery occasion saw referee Chris Munn hand out five yellow cards as the two sides battled to gain the advantage. Port Kembla finally broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Aliffi was able to put the ball past Lions’ keeper Gordon Despotovski from the penalty spot.

Cringila were unable to find an equaliser in the remaining 13 minutes with Port holding on for the win.

Bulli 1 – 0 Wollongong Olympic

Substitute Jared Fish proved the difference as Bulli went top of the league with 1-0 win over Wollongong Olympic at Balls Paddock on Saturday.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the first half as the score remained 0-0 for the opening 45 minutes. The second half looked to be shaping up much like the first until Fish was brought into the game. Fish popped up in the 68th minute to score, with just his second touch, from a glancing header what would be the game’s only goal.

The home side were nearly made to pay for a number of wasted opportunities in the opening 45 minutes with ‘Keeper Bryce Daenell making a fine double save deep in stoppage time as Bulli managed to hang on for another vital three points.

Bellambi 1 – 2 South Coast United

A goal in each half was enough for South Coast United to see off Bellambi at Elizabeth Park on Saturday.

South Coast opened the scoring in just the 10th minute when defender, Chris Valic found the back of the net with another headed goal (second consecutive game) for a 1-0 lead. The fast start gave way to a slow-burning first half as the score remained 1-0 going into the break.

The second half started with Bellambi angling to bring the sides level again but it was South Coast who netted first. In the 70th minute Anton Batur was able to grab a goal and stretch the lead to 2-0. Bellambi were finally able to find the net in the 84th minute through Michael Beveas but it proved too little, too late as South Coast came away 2-1 winners.

Albion Park White Eagles 1 – 0 Woonona

Daniel Treneski’s second half goal proved to be enough for Albion Park to see off Woonona at Terry Reserve on Saturday. The Sharkies, desperate to kick start their second half of the season, just couldn’t buy a goal on the day, hitting the wood-work three times and having a goal disallowed to boot.

Dapto Dandaloo Fury 1 – 1 Wollongong United

A last minute own goal rescued a point for Wollongong United as they drew 1-1 with Dapto Dandaloo at Dandaloo Oval on Sunday. You can read the full report here.
