STATE CUP FINALS SUNDAY 13 JULY

Media Release – Football NSW

Blacktown Football Park, home to the Blacktown & District Soccer Football Association as well as the Blacktown Spartans will host the 2014 State Cup Finals on Sunday 13th of July.

Association teams from across NSW are set to converge in Sydney’s West for what will be a memorable Finals day whereby the Frank Broughton Cup (12 Boys), Robertson Cup (21 Men), Bill Cullinan Cup (All Age Men) and Cheryl Salisbury Cup (12 Girls) will feature on what will be a great day for Football in NSW.

As many as fifteen Finals matches will be played starting from the 12’s right through to the Over 35 men.

The Frank Broughton Cup sees St George Association’s Connells Point taking on Gladesville Hornsby Association’s Ryde Saints United in a bid to see who will be crowned the 12 Boys Champions in the State.

Frank Broughton was a former Secretary of Canterbury Association as well as the Sydney Branch and State Body. Entry to this Cup was made available to all 11 Boys Association Representative sides with Canterbury hosting the inaugural tournament – the tournament then moved to the State Cups in 2013 when the Under 11s became non-competitive.

The Cheryl Salisbury Cup will see Eastern Suburbs Association’s Pagewood Botany taking on Northern Suburbs’ Northbridge FC.

The Cheryl Salisbury Cup tournament was introduced in 2008 as part of the Talent Identification Program for Under 12  Girls and attracted entries from Premier Youth, Super Youth, Country Branch representative teams and two local Association teams. As part of the Women’s Football review the tournament was moved to the State Cups in 2014. The Cup is named in honour of former Matildas star Cheryl Salisbury. Football NSW acknowledges Cheryl as Australia’s all-time highest capped player with 147 appearances and is Australia’s highest international goal scorer of all time with 36 goals.

The Robertson Cup has pitted Southern Districts’ AC United taking on fellow rivals Fairfield Pats. The Robertson Cup is a replica of the FA Cup played for at Wembley in England.  In 1956 and 1957 this trophy was awarded to the All Age teams but in 1958 it was changed to the 21 men’s competition where it remains today.  The trophy was originally donated by the late Mr Robertson and has been presented to the winning team by a member of the Robertson family since its inception.  Ruth Robertson will be presenting the trophy in 2014.

Finally in the All Age Men Final for the coveted Bill Cullinan Cup, Bankstown Association’s Revesby Rovers face Sutherland Association’s Menai Hawks.

In 2006 Football NSW recognised Bill Cullinan’s 30 years of distinguished service to competitions at all levels in this state by renaming the State amateur All Age Mens competition formerly known as the Amateur Cup, the Bill Cullinan Cup.The All Age Men’s competition was always Bill’s favourite competition and it is fitting this recognition is for this particular competition. Pam Cullinan is honoured to have this Cup named after her much loved husband and Football NSW believes it is only fitting that entrants are now competing for the prestigious ‘Cullinan Cup

The Football South Coast Association will be heavily represented on the day as many as six teams will participate in the final with Shellharbour the pick of the bunch having both its U14 and U16 girls involved.

Manly Association as well as the Sutherland Association will feature five teams on the day.

Northern Beaches side Wakehurst will have its 16 Boys and 18 Women involved. Gladesville Hornsby Association will have four teams representing its area.

Southern Districts will feature three teams with AC United’s 15 and 21 Boys playing for the Cup while Nepean Association will have two teams representing its association.

A cluster of Associations such as St George, Granville, Blacktown, Eastern Suburbs and Northern Suburbs Association will all have one club representing each area.
