ILLAWARRA MERCURY IPL RD 16 WRAP

Match of the Week

Fernhill 0 – 7 Bulli FC

League leaders Bulli produced an emphatic 7-0 win over strugglers Fernhill at Ray Robinson Field on Saturday. Fernhill finished the game with ten men as Ben McDonald scored a fantastic hat-trick to improve his season tally to 11 goals.

Cameron Littler set the tone for the rest of the match when he opened the scoring just five minutes into the game before netting his second in the 12th minute. Both goals were down to great runs down the left side from Dean Heffernan.
The third goal came through Hayden Mowbray and saw Bulli all but wrap up the match with only a half hour played. McDonald grabbed his first of the game just a minute before half time as Bulli cruised into the break with a 4-0 lead.

The scoring streak continued as the half resumed when Matthew Naylor converted from the penalty spot in the 50th minute after Littler had been bundled over inside the penalty area. McDonald was on hand to grab his second of the game just 11 minutes later before wrapping up his hat-trick and the game in the 80th minute with Bulli’s seventh goal. Fernhill’s Dean Kerr saw red on the day to cap a dismal outing for the club.

Rest of the Round

Bellambi 1 – 5 Wollongong United

Wollongong United also continued their impressive run of form with a 5-1 trouncing of Bellambi at Elizabeth Park on Saturday. Robbie Shields was on fire again, netting a hat-trick to extend his lead as the competition’s top goal scorer on 18 goals.

Wollongong were up 3-0 before 25 minutes had passed as they got off to a flying start with a goal from Brian Montinari in the 4th minute. Montinari doubled his tally in the 16th minute before Shields scored his first of the game just eight minutes later. Bellambi were able to pull a goal back in the 28th minute but that was as good as it got for the Rosellas as Shields struck again right on the stroke of half time to ensure Wollongong held a comfortable lead heading into the break.

The away side were happy to dictate the tempo of the game for much of the second half as they held onto the three goal cushion. Shields capped off the win with his third goal in the 89th minute to ensure Wollongong remain in a comfortable third place on the ladder.

Port Kembla 5 – 1 South Coast United

Port Kembla grabbed their third straight win with a 5-1 mauling of fourth placed South Coast United at Wetherall Park on Sunday. After a poor start to the season, last season’s champions are making a late run at the finals in the hopes of defending their title.

Experienced attacker Nuno Pires started a flurry of goals before half time with a strike in the 27th minute. Douglas Woodiwiss doubled the lead with a goal in the 34th minute before Dinko Terzic pulled one back for South Coast in the 42nd minute. Karouna Michael pushed the lead back to two goals for Port Kembla with a goal just a minute before the break.

The second half started with South Coast trying to pull themselves back into the match but it was Matthew Floro who stretched the game out of their reach with a goal for Port in the 58th minute. Frank Pierro came off the bench to cap the win for Port with a goal in the 83rd minute.

Woonona 1 – 4 Cringila Lions

Both teams finished with ten men as Cringila ran out 4-1 winners of Woonona at Ocean Park on Saturday. Red cards for Ryan Emerton for Woonona and Gordon Despotovski for Cringila overshadowed a fine hat-trick for Aleksander Angelkoski on the day.

Once Emerton was sent from the field in just the 19th minute, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the home side that are desperate for a change of fortune to kick-start their second half of the campaign.
Cord Tolson opened the scoring for Cringila with the only goal of the first half, five minutes before the interval.
The Sharkies worked hard after the break to make a game of it but were brought undone by Angelkovski’s five star showing in the final 20 minutes of the game.  Angelkoski netted his first in the 70th minute and then his second in the 85th minute. The striker grabbed his third in the 90th minute before Adam Di Pietro scored a late consolation for Woonona in the dying moments of the game just moments after Despotovski was given his marching orders for a senseless indiscretion involving an opponent.

Wollongong Olympic 2 – 2 Albion Park White Eagles

A late goal from Andrej Gacesa earned a 2-2 draw for Albion Park against Wollongong Olympic at the PCYC on Saturday.

Justin Potter was first on the scoresheet for Wollongong with a goal in the 34th minute to make it 1-0. The lead didn’t last long, however, as Dylan Wray found an equaliser for Albion Park just two minutes after going behind. The two sides remained locked at 1-1 going into half time.

The second half saw both teams pushing for the go ahead goal and it was Javier Ovando who put Olympic into the lead with a strike in the 65th minute. Wollongong were close to edging their way to a win before Gacesa popped up in the 85th minute to ensure the sides finished the game as they started, all tied up.
