AHEAD OF THE GAME

Diarmuid Hurley from the University of Wollongong’s Ahead of the Game project is looking for parents who are interested in participating in the Interactive Workshop on Adolescent Mental health.

The Ahead of the Game initiative aims to positively promote adolescent males’ mental health through sport clubs with the support of Football South Coast, the Blackdog Institute and the Movember Foundation.

This is just a quick message to any parents who may interested in participating in the parent component of the project , which is all about your role as a parent in optimally supporting positive mental health in your teen.

Over the last few months we have been talking to sport parents in the Illawarra and South Coast and we have developed these programs based on their insight and feedback. 1 hour interactive workshops on adolescent mental health will be offered covering:

  • How to identify symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • How to promote positive mental health in your family
  • How to talk about mental health
  • How to support and seek the right help for mental health disorders

These workshops will be offered starting early to mid August at a location and time convenient to you.

If you are interested in participating in one of these workshops and/or know someone else you might be interested  you can contact me through email- dsh725@uowmail.edu.au or phone 0459650548 or our project manager Vanessa O' Brien at vobrien@uow.edu.au

As a thank you for your time and interest, we will offer a $20 Coles/Myer voucher to each participant.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
