VALE: Jock Charman

Jock attended Helensburgh Public School between 1925 and 1932, playing soccer for the school and was a member of the team that won the Illawarra Schools Championship in 1932.

Soccer has always been a large part of his life, he remembers playing soccer as a boy, however there was not a lot of structure to the competitions back then. He has been involved with Helensburgh Soccer Club for more than 90 years. Jock worked tirelessly for Junior and Senior Soccer in Helensburgh over many decades and in many capacities. He coached junior teams from 1964 to 1977, he also coached the 1948 Ladies team that went through the season undefeated. He served on the committee for many years in many different roles.

Jock has never been afraid to “offer” his expertise and opinion to any coach that stands still long enough for him to catch – amazingly he usually makes a lot of sense in his tactics. He was honoured with the 2004 Season Opening game being named after him and has always been very proud of the Life Membership that has was bestowed upon him many years ago.

His funeral will be held at Helensburgh Soccer Club at 11am this Wednesday (19th October), followed by interment at the Helensburgh Cemetery, and then refreshments back at the soccer club.
