HEALTHY CANTEENS PROJECT

The Player Welfare Department of Football South Coast headed by Matt Whalan and the UOW, started an initiative to improve the nutritional standards of canteens at Junior grounds. In 2016 a project commenced between FSC and the University of Wollongong Dietetics Department to conduct a pilot study and research program to look at how to convert Junior canteens to "Healthy Canteens".  Figtree Football Club and Woonona Junior Football Club were part of this pilot which had fantastic results.

The goals of the Project were to:

  1. Investigate and implement ways to improve the nutritional value of food and drink sold at Junior canteens.
  2. To improve public awareness and engagement in healthy lifestyle choices and behaviours.
  3. To develop logistics pathways for this program to be implemented easily by volunteers.
  4. To increase revenue and profits for canteens at clubs.
  5. To improve football players food choice behaviours and performance outcomes.

Well done to all involved with this fantastic initiative which shows some very positive results.
