FRATERNITY CUP DISTRICT LEAGUE ROUND 1 WRAP

The 2018 Fraternity Club Preseason Cup District League Conference kicked off at Crehan Park on Thursday night with a Group B match between Bellambi and Thirroul.

The Rosellas fielded a completely revamped side compared to the one which finished at the bottom of the District League in 2017 and they were led by veteran poacher Ilija Prenzoski.

Over the course of the 70 minutes, there was little to split the teams but the deadlock was broken in the 68th minute when Bellambi conceded a penalty and defender Matt Richardson saw red. Thirroul's Corey Haines-Grose made no mistake from the mark, firing to the keeper's right and securing a 1-0 win.

On Friday night, Coniston took on the Oak Flats Falcons in a Group A match played at Macedonia Park. Coniston came into the match on the back of four trial matches which included a 3-1 win over Fernhill.

Coniston where perhaps the better side in the first 35 and they were rewarded two minutes before the break when Chris Stefanovski's corner was spilt into the net by Oak Flat's keeper Chris Jarman.

The Falcons managed to grab an equaliser eight minutes into the second half when Jaime Stevenson's drove a low free-kick into the bottom left of the Coniston goal.

Oak Flats continued to hustle Coniston but apart from the occasional set piece neither side looked like scoring a winner and the match finished 1-1.

On Sunday morning at Terry Reserve, Berkeley sports had a Group C clash with the newly rebranded Unanderra Hearts (formerly Wests Illawarra). The sides were locked at nil-all when they went into the sheds and it took until the 55th minute for a goal to be scored and it came through Berkeley's Jeremy Flanagan.

This caused the match to kick into action with Berkeley tripling their advantage over the next ten minutes. The hearts pegged a goal back before Greg Moon netted his second to secure a 4-1 win for the Goats.

The early kicked on Sunday morning at Barrack Heights Sports Field was a Group A meeting between Kiama and University. The star of the show was the Quarriers' Chris Christodoulou who knocked in a hattrick.

Benjamin Joyce scored for the Students with 15 minutes remaining to make it 3-2 but Kiama managed to hold on and secure the victory.

The second District League clash at Terry Reserve saw Balgownie take on Helensburgh in Group B. The Rangers pushed out to a 2-1 halftime lead with goals from Mark Jones and James Seymour. Both sides found the back of the net in the space of seven second-half minutes but it was the Rangers who went on to record a 3-2 victory.

The final match came in Group 3 with Shell Cove hosting Warilla. It was the first competitive match for the Barbarians since being promoted from Community League and they scored the only goal of the match through Diego Rodriguez who picked out the bottom left corner in the 24th minute.
