Thirroul teach University a lesson

University could not bounce back from last week’s loss to Oak Flats Falcons when they took on Thirroul Thunder at Kooloobong Oval on Saturday.

On a beautiful autumn afternoon, around one hundred spectators were treated to an intense match. The first half saw an even contest but in the second half Thirroul proved too strong for University winning the match convincingly 4 – 1.

The match started at a lively pace with University’s Luke Foscarini having an attempt at goal in the second minute of the match from a corner, but he was unsuccessful.

Thirroul hit back a few minutes later with the first goal of the match despite strong defence from the University side. The score - Thirroul 1 – University 0.

Thirroul had the chance to score again in the 7th minute when a shot was taken as a result of a corner but the chance was missed leaving the score 1-0.

A minute later, University had their chance to score when Michael Pitt crossed the ball in from the right hand side of the field to Abdamia Lawal who took a powerful unimpeded shot but the ball went over the goals.

The goal of the match was scored in the 11th minute when University’s Andrew Christie kicked a powerful shot from nearly forty metres out into the back of the net. The scores were now even 1 – 1.

In the 19th minute, Thirroul were denied a goal after the referee deemed the ball had not fully cross the goal line after a shot on goal.

A corner in the 32nd minute by Luke Foscarini gave University a chance to take the lead. Scott Mawbey headed the ball to Abdamia Lawal who was right in front of the goal but his attempt went over the goals.

University had two more chances to score and take the lead before the half time whistle but both attempts were unsuccessful. The half time score remained at 1-1.

The second half began with University having an unsuccessful attempt at goal.

However it was Thirroul who was able to break the deadlock in the 50th minute with a goal to Ryan Latini. Latini was able to roll the ball into the goal after the University goalkeeper collided with a Thirroul player leaving the goal open. The score Thirroul 2 – University 1.

Thirroul took control in the last forty minutes of the match.

A goal to Thirroul’s Matthew Kellond in the 56th minute saw the score go to Thirroul 3 – University 1.

In the 72nd minute a cross from Thirroul’s Matthew Kellond to Daniel Arthur allowed Daniel to score the final goal of the match.

Thirroul 4 – University 1

The last minute of the match gave Thirroul a chance to increase their score as a result of a free kick but they were unsuccessful.

The full time score therefore remained at Thirroul 4 – University 1. A well- deserved victory to Thirroul.
