Shell Cove overcome Cringila Lions

Barrack Heights Sports Field played host to the round 5 Illawarra Mercury Premier League match between Shell Cove and Cringila Lions. In a tough match, Shell Cove proved to be too strong with an impressive 5-2 victory over the Cringila Lions. To their credit though, Cringila Lions never gave up.

The match started at a lively pace with the Cringila Lions goalkeeper put under immediate pressure. A free kick awarded to Shell Cove in the first minute of the match gave Shell Cove’s Jordan Hassiem a chance to test the Tinker. The ball however hit the Cringila wall and was cleared to safety. Two minutes later, Shell Cove’s Goran Nikolovski had an attempt at goal from a corner but the Cringila Lions goalkeeper Joel Tinker again was in form and had no trouble in saving the attempt.

First goal of the game was scored in the sixth minute after Cringila Lions were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Daniel Ramirez crossed the ball to Daniel Atkins who then kicked the ball powerfully past the goalkeeper and into the right hand corner of the goal.

Cringila Lions appeared to be on top of Shell Cove at this stage and were fired up. A good run up the centre of the field by Cringila Lions' Hironari Kobayashi in the 18th minute of the match saw him have a shot at goal. Despite the goalkeeper failing to stop the ball, the follow up was not powerful enough for the ball to cross the line.

In the 22nd minute of the match, Shell Cove’s Daniel Vellonio attempted a shot at goal from outside the box requiring Tinker again to rescue Cringila as he came flying out of the box to save it. Minutes later though, Tinker however misjudged a balll causing the ball to head straight for the goal. Cringila Lion’s Daniel Wagus who was defending in front of the goals appeared to handle the ball to prevent a goal. The referee gave him an automatic red card and penalty to Shell Cove.

The resulting penalty kick to Shell Cove, taken by Goran Nikolovski, was well put away to level the scores.

The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute by Cringila Lions' Daniel Atkins after his free kick was successful.
