Women's Division 1 - Round 5 Review

There were some tight and tense games this week in the Builders Club Women's Division 1 League. Things are starting to get interesting.

In the match of the round, Tarrawanna ended Albion Parks unbeaten run with a gutsy 3-2 win at Tarrawanna Oval just as the Park ladies were looking to run away with the competition. It was a thrilling game with end of end action where the score could easily have been a lot higher.

Tarrawanna's Courtney Collins, Jasmine Pearce and the reliable Kahlia Muilwyk all got on the scoresheet with Albion Park's Kristina Glisic and youngster Hayley Markulic also scoring.

It was Tarrawanna's seasoned campaigner - Fran Halloway that called the shots and dictated play for the Blueys whilst Brittany Ring continued to cause Tarrawanna's defence problems.

The win puts Tarrawanna level on points with Albion Park. They will surely head into the rest of the season with great confidence after this win over the reigning Premiers. Both teams have difficult assignments next week with Tarrawanna away to Wollongong Olympic and Albion Park travelling to Thirroul.

Speaking of Thirroul and Wollongong Olympic, these two sides played out an enthralling 3-3 draw at Thomas Gibson Park over the weekend. Thirroul's top scorer Amanda Allnut got herself another goal whilst Kirsten Ward and Bethany Grew also scored for the Thunderbirds. Wollongong Olympic's Sophie Lederer takes her tally to 6 goals after bagging a double with Emi Skopal also scoring. Wollongong Olympic lost Jessica Cruickshank on 16 minutes after she was adjudged to deny a goal scoring opportunity with Olympic 1-0 up at that stage.

Kirsten Ward was oustanding for the home side along side Alexandra Sands and Amanda Allnutt in a game Thirroul will feel perhaps they let slip.

Woonona put themselves in third spot following their 3-1 win at Port Kembla. Port were unable to repeat their heriocs from last week where they upset Olympic. Woonona were never really headed in this game with Sinead Bailey, Fiona Leafe and Jordan Wheatley all getting the Sharkies' goals. Port's reply came from Alexandra Adams.

Woonona's Shenae Giraldi and Sinead Bailey helped control the game for the home side whilst Megan Blanch was probably Port's best player.

Both teams will be looking to bounce back this weekend with Port Kembla hosting the winless Helensburgh and Woonona travelling to Balgownie.

Both Helensburgh and Balgownie have struggled to compete in Division 1 so far with just one goal scored between these two sides all year before this game. It was Balgownie that came out on top with a 2-0 win leaving the Burgh ladies with nothing to show yet from their first five games after promotion from Division 2.

It was Adelaide Isedale who chimed in and scored the two only goals of the match to give the visitors their first points of the season. Both these sides face tough opposition next week with Helensburgh travelling to Port Kembla and Balgownie hosting Woonona.
