Wollongong United too slick for Bulli

An entertaining game took place at Macedonia Park on Saturday in the Round 7 fixture between Wollongong United and Bulli which saw Wollongong United convincingly defeat Bulli 3-1.

The game got off to a fast paced start with both teams looking early to score. Wollongong United had a chance to put the first points on the board in the 11th minute with Jinya An heading the ball from right in front of the goals but it went straight into the Bulli goalkeeper’s hands.

Quick passing from Wollongong United led to their second attempt at goal from a corner by Jinya An but it was unsuccessful. Despite this, Wollongong United were beginning to dominate.

Wollongong United continued to pressure the Bulli goalkeeper with a Karouna Michael shot hitting a Bulli player’s leg and deflecting towards the goals but just missed the goal posts.

By now Wollongong United was on top of Bulli but were unable to score despite numerous attempts at goal. Bulli’s goalkeeper (Kuwata) handled the pressure well which was seen in the 30th minute when he leaped over strikers and defenders to stop a corner from Jinya An going in.

Finally in the 36th minute, Wollongong United scored after Angelo Hajifotti crossed the ball to Jinya An who was directly in front of the goals with only one defender around him. He headed the ball from the cross into the left hand side of the goals. The goalkeeper had dived backwards, reaching with his hand to try and knock it back but the attempt to save it was unsuccessful.

Wollongong United led Bulli 1-0 into the break.

Wollongong United came out after half time and was immediately on the attack with two attempts at goal which were unsuccessful.

Bulli fought back with two corners that could not be converted into goals. Bulli was awarded another corner which was taken by Aaron Baker. Numerous Bulli players attempted to put the ball away until one shot deflected back from the goal post into play hitting Bulli’s Kenji Taicahashi in the chest allowing him to use his chest to score the equalising goal for Bulli.

Bulli had two more chances to take their score to 2-1 but both attempts were unsuccessful.

Wollongong United then scored their second goal after Johnny Mavtrovski kicked the ball from the left hand side into the right hand side of the goals.

Wollongong United 2 – Bulli 1

Wollongong United by now had command of the game and it was not long before they scored again. A good build up by Wollongong United allowed a quick counter attack whipping the ball into the box and allowing Klime Sekutkoska to score from close range.

Full time score Wollongong United 3 – Bulli 1.
