Wollongong United take revenge on Cringila

A decent crowd turned up to Macedonia Park Berkeley on Tuesday night to watch the round 16 MCR Bert Bampton cup match between Wollongong United and Cringila. It was always going to be difficult to live up to the exciting 4-3 win overthe weekend by Cringila.  Wollongong United reversed the result in a dominant display to win the match 2-0 although to be fair, Cringila Lions had chances which they could not capitalise on.

The match started at a lively pace with a goal to Wollongong United’s Klime Sekutkoski in the first minute but offside was called and the goal was disallowed.

It was not long before Wollongong United was presented with another chance to score. In the seventh minute Wollongong United’s Zac Mazevski took a shot at goal outside the box but the ball rebounded off the goal keeper back to Wollongong United’s Klime Sekutkoski who took control of the ball and scored. Wollongong United 1 – Cringila Lions 0.

In the 24th minute a free kick to Wollongong United, taken by Jordan Hooke gave Wollongong United another opportunity to put points on the board but the shot was high and went over the top of the goals.

Wollongong United’s second goal of the match came in the 30th minute. Tim Wylie crossed the ball from the sideline to Klime Sekutkoski who was on the opposite of the field. Sekutkoski and a Cringila defender ran for the ball but the ball ended up passing the Cringila player and in front of Sekutkoski who took the ball up. The Cringila player made another attempt to defend but Sekutkoski was able to get around him and with a powerful shot scored Wollongong United’s second goal. Wollongong United 2 – Cringila 0.

Wollongong United had another opportunity to go further ahead on the scoreboard when a free kick was awarded after Sekutkoski was tripped but the kick was headed back into play. With that the half time whistle was blown leaving the score 2-0 in favour of Wollongong United.

The second half saw Cringila Lions attempt two shots at goal within the first two minutes as they adopted a more aggressive approach. However both attempts were unsuccessful.

In the 52nd minute Cringila Lions again attempted to put points on the scoreboard. Alexander Bescvski crossed the ball to Hironori Kobayashi who ran up the sideline and attempted a shot at goal but it too was unsuccessful.

Wollongong United had their chance to add more points in the 62nd minute after a free kick was awarded following a trip by Cringila. Tim Wylie took the kick but the shot went over all the player’s heads and hit the side post.

Wollongong United had more chances to increase their points tally from free kicks and corners but each attempt was unsuccessful.

Cringila Lions had their chances too. While they consistently were able to get the ball in front of the goal they were unable to complete their moves and score.

Caius Don was sent off for a second cautionable offence late in the game to make it a rather forgetable evening for Cringila who also lost the Youth Grade fixture 4-2.

Wollongong United though worthy winners on the night.
