WOMEN'S DIVISION 1 - ROUND 20 PREVIEW

It's the final round of the regular season this weekend and after hanging in there all year, Tarrawanna have given themselves a huge shot at winning the League Title needing just a win in their last game on the weekend. Albion Park can still win it if Tarrawanna drop points in what has been an extraordinary finish to the Women's Division 1 competition for 2016.

All games on Sunday 14 August

Woonona v Helensburgh @ Ocean Park - 1.00pm

Woonona have secured a playoff position and will be looking to finish the season on a high. Their 0-0 draw last week to Thirroul realistically dashed hopes they had of finishing top this year although mathematically they can still finish top. They will however need to beat Helensburgh this week and win their catch upo match against Port Kembla.

Helensburgh have found the transition to Division 1 very difficult and they are likely to see themselves back in Division 2 next year although their young team may be better for the experience.

Woonona can ill afford to drop any points here however with the Burgh only registering a single point all year, I can't see anything but a Woonona win on Sunday. They will be banking on other results though to go their way.

Wollongong Olympic v Port Kembla @ Innovation Campus - 2.00pm

Olympic have all but sealed fourth spot and only need a draw against Port Kembla. Ironically, they still have a catch up game against the Port girls as well. Olympic may be licking their wounds after being humbled 4-1 by Albion Park midweek.

Port Kembla will need to beat Wollongong Olympic twice in a week and get something from another catch up game against Woonona if they are to sneak into the playoffs. Although the permatations are there, realistically there is more chance of shaking hands with the pope than Port making the playoffs.

I think Wollongong Olympic will get at least a draw with Port from the Sunday match.

Albion Park v Balgownie @ Terry Reserve - 2.00pm

Albion Park have led most of the way through the season and along the way won the State Cup but recent dropped points have put them in a position where they no longetr control their own destiny. They still need to do the business against Balgownie and hope that Thirroul can surpise Tarrawanna.

Balgownie have battled hard all season however have not been able to match it with any of the top teams this year. They will find the going tough one suspects against a fired up Park side looking to make it three championships in a row.

Suspect that Albion Park will be too good for Balgownie this week.

Thirroul v Tarrawanna @ Thomas Gibson Park - 3.00pm

Thirroul have been stubborn opponents for most of the top teams this year and despite needing a miracle to make the playoffs, they are sure to make Tarrawanna earn their points on Sunday afternoon. Thirroul held Woonona scoreless last week and a repeat this week could see Albion Park or even Woonona take up the podium finish.

Tarrawanna have been hanging in there all season and despite losing to Albion Park (once) and Woonona (twice), they have won all other (14) games.
Tarrawanna have destiny firmly in their hands. They have beaten Thirroul twice already this year (2-0 and 7-0) subsequently not having conceded a goal to the Thunderbirds.

It's hard to see Tarrawanna dropping points this weekend particularly with the championship on the line however stranger things have happened in football.

Overall, a thrilling finish is on the cards in the Women's Division 1 competition for 2016.
