SEASON PREVIEW: WESTS ILLAWARRA FC

Wests had a great start to their sesson last year making the Fraternity Club Cup Final with a very young team but sadly that is about as good as it got with a season they would perhaps much rather forget.

Coach Arthur Kinnas gave several young players an opportunity in First Grade and perhaps their lack of experience showed in a season where they promied so much but finished 11th.

The club has lost a few players this year and the bulk of their gun Youth Grade side so depth will be tested at the club. They have however picked up a couple of important signings. Young gun - Chris Twigg (ex-Port Kembla) is a player who is capable of taking this league by storm and he has already bagged a couple of goals in preseason. Diogo Andrade is another of their key signings. He has State League experience having played last year with Bankstown City in NPL2.

Wests were in a very tough group in the 2017 Fraternity Club Cup having played 3 teams that finsihed in the playoffs last year. The positive for them is that they scored in each of their preseason games against this calibre of opposition. on the flip side, they conceded 2 or more goals in each of these matches. This is where I think Wests will perhaps struggle.

With some issues yet to be resolved defensively, I think Wests will finish in the bottom half of the table although they will be competitive in most of their matches.
