SEASON PREVIEW: WOONONA SHARKS

Geoff Foster has taken over the reins at Ocean Park, where he’ll need to tighten things up after a difficult 2016 campaign, which saw the Sharks lose seven times on home soil. They had a steady start to the pre-season Fraternity Cup, winning one of the three pool games and earning a draw with Bulli. You can’t judge a season on a pre-season tournament, but there is little so far to indicate a massive upsurge for the Sharks in the IPL this year.

Players to watch

Two new signings look to be leading at the front for Woonona. Daniel Atkins has come in from Cringila and if he can match the six goals he scored for the Lions last year, he’ll be a very useful addition to Foster’s strike force. Also new is Luke McCosker, who was playing up front for Sutherland District outfit Lilli Pilli FC in 2016. Atkins and McCosker scored the Sharks’ two goals in the Fraternity Cup, so they’ll be looking to build on that start.

Josh Woods is an intriguing signing from Kemblawarra Fury’s Youth Grade in 2016. Other than that, keep an eye on the ever-dangerous Cameron Banks, Trent Worthington. Last season’s top scorer Caleb Russell has gone to Tarrawanna Blueys for 2017.

Season Expectation

It’s hard to get too excited about the Sharks’ prospects for 2017. They flirted with relegation in 2016 and I expect things to be similar in 2017, though I tip them to hold onto 10th spot in the ladder come the end of the regular season.
