PEARCE SETS UP COMFORTABLE WIN FOR BLUEYS

Players and spectators were greeted to pleasant weather at Tarrawanna Oval Sunday afternoon for the second round of The Builders Club Women’s Division 1 match where Tarrawanna took on University FC.

It was Tarrawanna who came out on top with a whopping 6-0 win over the visitors who didn’t let down without a fight.

Tarrawanna settled the quickest, starting the game the stronger of the two teams immediately on the attack, with several attempts on goal within the first few minutes.

Tarrawanna showed great intent to attack right from the opening whistle. It only took three minutes for Tarrawanna to open the scoring as Taryn Marie Ruiz headed the ball into the net after a cross from the right.

Just six minutes later and Tarrawanna were on goal again. It was Jasmin Pearce who penetrated the defence before nailing a 20-yard strike that eluded the outstretched hands of University’s keeper Jemma Thomson. It was 2-0 to Tarrawanna inside 10 minutes and things were looking rather ominous for the newly promoted club – University.

University was pegged back deep in their half desperately trying to hold off a rampant Tarrawanna side that was in search of more goals.

University’s first real chance at goal occurred after 15 minutes when Tallara Shaw’s free kick narrowly went wide.

Two minutes later though and Tarrawanna effectively sealed the contest when University failed to deal with a corner kick and with the ball bobbling around the goal area, Jasmin Pearce headed the loose ball in to make it 3-0 after 17 minutes and a long way back for University who would have hoped for a better start to the game.

The ball very rarely saw play in University’s attacking half in the first half of the game as Tarrawanna showed fine, structured form and was fighting very hard for the win. Hesitation from University when they had these half chances saw them effectively untroubled the opposition goalkeeper.

On 32 minutes, Pearce was at it again as she ran towards goal right through the middle of the field as Camille Augustyn and Kerry Matthews lay the groundwork in intercepting the ball from University. With only the keeper to beat, Pearce slid the ball past Thompson to make it 4-0 and seal her hat-trick.

University were squeezed out of what little possession they had on most occasions as Tarrawanna enforced a high-pressure game on the visitors not allowing them much time on the ball. University to their credit saw out the first half with no further damage to the scoreboard.

The break could not come quick enough for University and gauging by their second half intent, a few choice words must have been spoken as the team looked a lot hungrier for the ball and suddenly Tarrawanna found themselves defending the early part of the second stanza.

Their desire and rejuvenated start to the second half was almost rewarded just before the hour mark when Lisa Prior ran the ball down the left skipping past Tarrawanna’s defence before putting in a pin point cross to Kara Abbott who unfortunately placed the ball wide just metres from goal. There were positive signs for University.

Just as University were gaining some momentum, Tarrawanna nipped in to score their fifth goal of the game on 77 minutes. Pearce found herself in space again in behind the defence and easily rounded keeper Thompson to put the Blueys 5-0 up.

University looked a little deflated after that and just minutes later, Pearce wrapped up the scoring after finding space out left before firing past the keeper for her fifth goal of the match and rounded off the scoring 6-0 to Tarrawanna.

It was a good start to the season for the home side who are defending Premiers and an impressive personal performance from FSC Women’s All Star player Jasmin Pearce with her personal five-goal haul. University have plenty to work to do over the coming weeks although they can take some heart from a better second half performance.
