WOMENS: TOP 4 TEAMS STARTING TO PULL AWAY

The Builders Club Women's Division 1 competition is just starting to heat up as the favourites rise to the top of the table after 5 rounds.

Albion Park are looking for redemption after they finished runners up last year whilst defending league champions Tarrawanna remain in the hunt and within touching distrance. Woonona showed last year that they are not here to just make up the numbers and they are a serious title contender this year. Thirroul White round off the top 4 after some solid performances already this year suggesting that they are going to have a big say in who takes out this years title.

Round 5 saw two mid table sides battle out a hard fought game where Kiama edged out University 2-1 @ Kiama Leisure Centre. Allira-Giles Gregory and Rachel Sheppard scoring for the Quarriers whilst the hard working Stella Vieth managed to score for the visitors. Sheppard proved a handful for the University defence all afternoon whilst University midfielder Edith Meli was solid for her side. Kiama take on the winnless Thirroul Blue this weekend whilst University have an opportunity to rest up as they have the Bye.

Albion Park made light work of Thirroul Blue handing them a 12-0 thumping. Albion Park showed they mean business this year as they showed the new girls in Division 1 no mercy. Goal scoring sensation Brittany Ring helped herself to 4 goals making her current league top goal scorer with 13 goals. Casey Leigh Suttle and Shakiah Tungai scored a brace each whilst Kaelah Austin, Claire Duffy, Kristina Glisic and Madison Wunsch also etching their names on the scoresheet. Shout out to Linda Hillard who orchestrated many of the moves that resulted in goals. Albion Park travel to Fernhill next week in what should (at least on paper) be another three points however they did drop points to lower teams last year at crucial stages of the competition which ultimately cost them the title.

In what was perhaps last weeks match of the round, Woonona showed their creditials this year with a comprehensive 3-0 win over reigning premiers Tarrawanna at Ocean Park. The Sharks were ruthless in taking out Tarrawanna with Shannon Peters taking her season tally to 5 goals in 5 games after netting a double. Kelsey Clements also scoring for the Sharks to round off their most impressive win of the season so far. The Sharks are yet to concede a goal in their 2017 season campaign and are level with Park at the top of the ladder and have a game in hand. Woonona take on Thirroul White this week and based on their current form, you could be forgiven for banking three more points for the Sharks. Tarrawanna will be looking to bounce back when they take on Balgownie Rangers who are coming off the Bye last week.

Thirroul White fielded a very youthful side last Sunday as they edged out Fernhill 1-0 with U21's player Veronica Calderon netting what turned out to be the winner and only goal of the game. Fernhill were clearly missing the inspirtaional leadership of Emi Skopal as they struggled to maintain possession however their missed opportunities came back to haunt them as the Thunderbirds walked away with a handy win propelling them in the top 4.

The table as it stands after Round 5 as at 11 May.
