WOMENS: KIAMA PUT SIX PAST THIRROUL BLUE

Thirroul Blue hosted Kiama Quarriers at Thomas Gibson Park for the sixth round of the Builders Club Women’s Division 1 competition on Sunday afternoon. Kiama running out 6-0 winners. Kiama started the game sitting in a respectable 5th position whilst the home team are currently struggling to cope with the demands of Division 1 and bottom of the table.

Kiama dominated most of the early possession and they were immediately rewarded on 5 minutes as they capitalised on a swift counter attack that resulted in Tamara Duckitt placing it past the advancing keeper to put the visitors ahead.

Thirroul were struggling to put any great sequence of passing together as they turned the ball over regularly in midfield. The possession early was clearly in Kiama’s favour.

The Quarriers got their second on 12 minutes after Thirroul’s Evelyn Fetterplace was unfortunately recorded as having scored an own goal. Fetterplace was closed quickly by Kiama’s Nerissa Peterson and with little other option, the ball was played back to the keeper who had the ball slipped under her feet as he tried to control the ball. The ball trickled into the goal much to the amazement of those at the ground. It seemed to sum up Thirroul Blue’s season to date as they found themselves 2-0 down early.

Kiama got their third on 24 minutes as Thirroul’s goalkeeper was left stranded outside the penalty area following a mistimed clearance. Sandra Janjetovic latched on to the loose ball to round the keeper and calmly slot the Kiama’s third as things were starting to look ominous for the home side.

Thirroul managed to stem the tide for a short period and Margaret Andreason had a chance to pull one back for Thirroul however her shot was tame and Megan Blanch was able to safely collect the ball with ease.

That was effectively the last highlight of the half as Kiama took a 3-0 lead into half time.

Just 2 minutes after half time, Alex Stronach added to the score with a well taken goal. He found space on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a fierce shot that help the Thirroul keeper helpless as she could only look on as the ball nestled into the back of the net.

Thirroul did put up a bit more resistance from that point on and their rise in intensity was almost rewarded as Andreason beat her opponent for pace and fired a shot at goal from an angle that was caught by Blanch who was called upon much more in the second half as Thirroul pushed for a goal of their own.

It was the 64th minute that Kiama got their 5th after some great lead up work by Jenna Shiaxiates was finished off by player of the match Duckitt who just got her second of the match.

Just five minutes later and five goals turned into six as Rebecca Welsh tapped in from close range as Jenna Shiaxiates’ wonderful cross found her open ion the far post.

This concluded the scoring and ended a game Thirroul Blue would perhaps rather forget.
