WOMENS: ROUND 6 REVIEW

Women’s Division 1 Wrap – Round 6

With all previously washed out games now caught up, Woonona have given themselves a 3-point buffer at the top of the table having gone 6 from 6. Albion Park are their closest rivals and with 2/3 of the season remaining, these two teams will be looking to continue their good start to the season. Reigning Premiers Tarrawanna already find themselves 6 points behind and a lot of work to do to go back to back.

Our feature match this week saw Kiama Quarriers dismantle Thirroul Blue 6-0 in a fairly one sided game. Tamara Duckitt kicked things off with the opening goal before Thirroul conceded an own goal. Sandra Janjetovic, rounded the keeper to make it three and Alex Stronach scored a peach of a goal to make it four. Tamara Duckitt got her second to make it 5 and Rebecca Welsh completed the scoring with Kiama’s sixth. The win propels Kiama to fifth spot and equal points as Thirroul White.

Tarrawanna also won 6-0 against a depleted Balgownie side that battled hard with just 9 regular players on Sunday. The Rangers were forced to use several younger players in the squad. Jasmin Pearce took full advantage of this by adding to her goal tally as she scored 4 of the Blueys 6 goals. Irene Kyriacou also getting on the scoresheet as did Leah Carlon. Tarrawanna maintain third place as a result.

Albion Park showed no mercy on struggling Fernhill putting seven unanswered goals past them. Brittany Ring added 2 more goals to her impressive tally as did Casey-Leigh Suttle. Rylee Mcgartland, Kristina Glisic and Kaelah Austin also helping themselves to goals. Coach Davis’ chargers are just starting to hit their straps and although they currently sit second, on this form, they are going to be hard to stop. For Fernhill, they just could not find a way to stop the power, strength and quality from Park.

Woonona played a double header this weekend to complete the catch-ups. On Saturday, the Sharkies battled hard to overcome a stubborn University side 2-0 with Le-Tisha Kable and Elyse McNally getting their goals. On Sunday, Woonona defeated Thirroul White 2-1 to go outright leaders of the Builders Club Women’s 1 Competition. In the process, they conceded their first goal of the year. A remarkable achievement. They are showing that goals win you matches but a strong defence can win you the league.
