WAVES CRASH OUT AND GOALS GALORE FOR OLYMPIC - FFA CUP ROUND 2 WRAP

There were five Football South Coast sides entered into the second round of the FFA Cup, however, only four needed to take to the field after Port Kembla were handed a walkover after Auburn FC forfeit. Port move through to the third round where they will travel to Dunbar Rovers of the NPL 3.

On Friday night, Bulli travelled to Moore Park to take on Coogee United in the first match of the second round. The Premier League heavyweights took the lead inside the opening ten minutes courtesy of a Dylan Lewis strike but United pegged them back with a 37th minute penalty. Bulli pushed for a winner which finally came with 20 minutes remaining, Lewis linking up with Mitch Del Turco who slotted home. Bulli progress to the third round where they will host NPL 3 side Inter Lions SC.

Wollongong Olympic got their FFA Cup campaign up and running with a resounded 13-0 win over Norwest FC at Valentine Park on Saturday. Last season’s Premier League top goalscorer, Yusuke Ueda was on fine form, finding the back of the net on five occasions. Jack Balmforth netted four while Robbie Gaudiosi bagged a brace. Olympic will host Bass Hill in round three.

The most exciting story heading into the round was the participation of Coledale Waves who became the first Community League side to enter the nationwide knockout. The Waves drew a home tie against Penrith Rovers, however, the match was forced to be moved to Elizabeth Park as the goals at St. James Park had not yet been resurrected in the wake of cricket season.

It was always going to be a tough encounter for Coledale who were playing their first match of the season. At halftime they found themselves down two goals to nil and unfortunately, the Illawarra third-tier side shipped another two in the second half, ultimately going down 4-0. Rhys Kennedy was the star man for the Rovers with the attacker picking up a well-worked hattrick.

The Waves supporters also turned out in numbers with plenty of bright pink splattered around the ground. Congratulations to Coledale for entering the Cup and we hope to see them back in the mix in 2019.

The shock of round two came on Tuesday night with Wollongong United travelling to Blacktown to face Doonside Hawks. The Premier League side beat Doonside 4-2 in last season’s competition and they were expecting a similar result this time around. The Hawks had other ideas and Scott Jackson kicked them out to a 2-0 lead during the second half, United pulled a goal back but their star-studded lineup were incapable of finding an equaliser. The match finishing 2-1 to Doonside.
