FRATERNITY CLUB CUP DISTRICT LEAGUE - ROUND 2 REVIEW

In the first game of round two on Friday night in the Fraternity Club Cup, Oak Flats recorded their first win and goals of the competition defeating Balgownie 3-0 at Crehan Park in Group D.

A Jarryd Vinton goal opened the scoring midway through the second half which was added to by a Chad Fernandez 63rd minute strike.

Finally, Brenton Burke scored the third goal four minutes later to put the game to bed.

The win puts Oak Flats on track for the quarter finals while Balgownie will need to get something out of their final game against Shell Cove.

Oak Flats Falcons 3 (Jarryd Vinton 47’, Chad Fernandez 63’, Brenton Burke 67’) Balgownie Rangers 0

In the second Friday night game, Kiama came back from two goals behind to win 3-2 against Berkeley.

Heath Sheppard got Berkeley off to flyer netting 15 minutes in before the lead was doubled by Jayson Atanasoski in the 28th minute meaning they led 2-0 at the break.

In the 41st minute, Kane Row halved the deficit from the spot and just over five minutes later they were back on level terms with another spot-kick this time through Keegan Beringer.

Brian Montanari secured the win for Kiama in the 64th minute.

Berkeley conceded on average 2.3 goals per game last season and have already conceded 6 goals in the two games they have played in the Fraternity Club Cup.

This coupled with dropping a two-goal lead, could be creating some concern among the Berkeley faithful.

Kiama responded well from a 4-1 defeat to Unanderra last time around and showed great character to come from behind.

However, they have conceded the same amount of Berkeley in the two games played so far and are yet to keep a clean sheet.

Berkeley Sports 2 (Heath Sheppard 15’, Jayson Atanasoski 28’) Kiama Quarriers 3 (Kane Rowe 41’, Keegan Beringer 47’, Brian Montanari 64’)

In the first of Sunday’s games at Memorial Park University pulled off an upset 2-1 win against Illawarra District League League grand finalists Warilla. University’s Jesse Howard opened the scoring 16 minutes in meaning the Students went into the break in the lead.

Parity was restored in the 45th minute as Brenton Geribo fired home but Jesse Howard’s second goal of the game in the 63rd minute was the winner for University.

This was a huge improvement for University who last time against Warilla in the Illawarra District League lost 8-0.

Warilla sit bottom of Group E without a point, meaning they will not feature in the knockout stages of this year’s tournament.

Warilla Wanderers 1 (Brenton Geribo 45’) University 2 (Jesse Howard 16’, 63’)

In the second game at Memorial Park, Helensburgh won 3-2 against Thirroul.

Just ten minutes in, Luke van Zyl scored for the second week running before in the 30th minute Kei Mitani doubled the lead and a minute later, they were 3-0 up courtesy of Cody Cuthbertson.

After the break, Thirroul cut the lead back to a single goal through Joel Mucci in the 54th minute and Ryan Latini in the 64th minute.

However, they were unable to find the equaliser. This result sends Helensburgh three points clear in Group E.

Helensburgh Thistle 3 (Luke van Zyl 10’, Kei Mitani 30’, Cody Cuthbertson 31’) Thirroul Thunder (Joel Mucci 54’, Ryan Latini 64’)

In the first game on Sunday at Wetheral Park, Unanderra went down 1-0 to Bellambi with Chris Cevenini getting the only goal in the 33rd minute.

This result follows last season’s trend as Bellambi in both of their games against Unanderra won by just a one-goal margin.

The continuation of Bellambi’s 100% record sends them top of Group F and in a prime position to go through to the later rounds of the competition.

Unanderra drop to second place in the group only ahead of Kiama on goal difference.

Unanderra 0 Bellambi 1 (Christian Cevenini 33’)

The second game at Wetheral Park played out a 2-0 win for Picton against Shell Cove.

The two goals scored were Picton’s first of the competition contrasting Shell Cove who are still yet to score.

Matthew Tesoriero opened the scoring 13 minutes in and Benjamin Roberts doubled that advantage. Shell Cove now sit bottom of Group D with just a solitary point after two rounds.

Picton, however, move up to second and with a win against Oak Flats on the final day could see them into top spot.

Shell Cove could potentially still make through if they are able to beat Balgownie and if Oak Flats can maintain their winning run against Picton.

Picton 2 (Matthew Tesoriero 13’, Benjamin Roberts 48’) Shell Cove 0
