FRATERNITY CLUB CUP PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 3 REVIEW

Corrimal made it a perfect three wins from three Fraternity Club Cup group games with a 1-0 win over Cringila at Memorial Park on Thursday night.

It was perhaps Corrimal’s least impressive performance of the competition as they struggled to muster clear cut chances against a stout Lions outfit.

It would take a glorious Jason Zufic cross seven minutes into the second half to unlock the defence with Matthew Galanti heading the ball into the back of the net from close range.

The goal was Galanti’s second in as many matches and it was enough to see them top Group C with nine points with seven goals for a zero against while the Lions were left holding up the rest.

Albion Park White Eagles burst out of the blocks to secure back-to-back 2-1 victories, this time beating Port Kembla at Terry Reserve on Friday night.

Cameron Morgan netted a brace inside the opening 22 minutes and he could have had a third shortly after had he been more selfish.

The home team lost their way in the second half with Port working hard to get back into the game but their only goal came through Nuno Pires with a couple of minutes remaining.

The result saw Albion Park top Group B with six points, only ahead of Port Kembla and Woonona thanks to their head-to-head record (in the case of Port Kembla) and total goals scored (in the case of Woonona).

Coniston won their first match of the preseason tournament beating Fernhill 2-1 in the midday match at Elizabeth Park on Sunday.

The contest between the two most recently promoted sides saw the 2018 District League winners Coniston two goals to the good at the break with Kohei Enokido and Mark Picciolini both scoring via Yuki Samoto corners.

Fernhill would score their own from a corner late in the piece with Jack Lombo’s thumping header finding the back of the net.

The result sees Coniston finish in second with four points, one point more than the Foxes who have to settle for third.

Wollongong Olympic laboured to a 1-0 win over Bulli in the late kick off at Elizabeth Park on Sunday.

The reigning Illawarra Premier League champions struggled to get out of their own half during the opening period of the match and Olympic capitalised after Kyle Hazebroek’s clumsy challenge gifted them a penalty which Yusuke Ueda confidently dispatched.

Olympic continued to dominate for the remainder of the match but they couldn’t kill off their rivals who managed to create a couple of gilt-edged chances which fell to Ben McDonald and Mitch Turner.

Similar to Corrimal, Olympic top their group with three wins without conceding a goal while Bulli finish last in a group containing the two most recently promoted sides.

Tarrawanna needed a three-goal victory to finish as the best second-placed side and that is exactly what they got with a 3-0 win over South Coast United in the 12pm match on Sunday at Macedonia Park.

The Blueys led 1-0 at the break after Cody Waller netted in the 29th minute before the side went on with the job in the second half scoring twice in six minutes through Liam Unicomb.

The win means the finish second in Group C, three points behind Corrimal, as for South Coast, they finish in third despite conceding a Premier League competition high of nine goals across the three group matches.

Tarrawanna Blueys 3 (Cody Waller 29’, Liam Unicomb 49’ 55’) South Coast United 0

Wollongong United’s underwhelming Fraternity Club Cup campaign came to an end with a third straight defeat, this time going down by a goal to nil at home to Woonona.

United fielded a side brimmed with under 23s players who performed admirably against the full strength Sharks who needed to win by two or more to progress to the quarter finals.

Woonona opened the scoring just before half time when Corey Haines Grose’s harrying created an opportunity for Jesse French to finish off for his fourth goal of the tournament.

The Sharks couldn’t find a second leaving them third in Group B despite securing six points across the three matches.
