2019 FRATERNITY CLUB CUP FINAL PREVIEW

The 2019 Fraternity Club Cup comes to its climax on Sunday with Albion Park White Eagles and Corrimal Rangers going head-to-head to lift the preseason trophy at Memorial Park.

These sides have been the standout performers of the tournament as well as the top two Premier League goal scorers with the Albion Park netting 14, three more their final opponents.

The only time the White Eagles have won the preseason cup came in 1998 when they were called the Wollongong White Eagles while Corrimal's only success in this competition was in the District League variant which they won in 2016 though they made the final the following year in Premier League.

Albion Park have taken an interesting path to the final after an opening round 2-1 defeat to Woonona Sharks but they bounced back to beat both Wollongong United and Port Kembla by the same scoreline.

In their quarter-final, Albion Park made light work of District League outfit Oak Flats, beating them 5-0, however, they faced another second-tier side in Bellembi in the semi-final who they struggled to overcome in a 4-3 victory.

White Eagles coach Paul Carter hopes last Sunday's match was the wake up call his side needed heading into the final and by extension, the regular season.

"We didn't play to our own standard ... it was disappointing but we have to learn to go into a match where we are expected to do well and do well," Carter explained.

"I won't hide the fact that it was never an objective to win [the Fraternity Club Cup] but we certainly don't want to go there on Sunday and not win it."

"Winning breeds confidence, winning breeds happiness so if we happen to win on Sunday it is a positive but at the same time next week it's a brand new competition where everyone will be starting on zero points and having the same dreams."

Corrimal were the form side of the group stage beating South Coast United, Tarrawanna and Cringila without conceding a goal.

The Rangers faced second division side Helensburgh in the final eight and they need penalties to overcome them after it was 1-1 after 90 minutes but they followed that up with a commanding 3-0 win over Premier League heavyweights Wollongong Olympic.

Corrimal co-coach Robert Jonovski believes last weekend's result was a massive boost for his side though he doesn't want his players to think their positions are assured or for anyone at the club to get caught up with speculation about the club being Premier League title contenders.

"[The win over Wollongong Olympic] is going to do wonders for our side, but it's not just that game because any victory gives us confidence," Jonovski said.

"Our full focus is on Sunday's game but all we know is the following week we are playing the Illawarra Premier League champions and who is still looking to nail down a spot? They all are."

"I can't stop people [outside the club] talking about [if we can win the Illawarra Premier League] but we are a work in progress, wherever that takes us we will see but I am very happy with our preseason."

The final is set to kick off at 2.30 pm with Bellambi Rosellas and Wollongong Olympic contesting the third-place playoff at 12.30 pm.
