FSC FFA CUP ROUND 2 REVIEW

The second round of the FFA Cup has been contested over the past seven days with all three Football South Coast sides making their way through to the next phase.

Match 1 - University of Wollongong vs Leeton United

On Sunday, the new synthetic pitch at Ian McLennan Park experienced its first dose of senior competitive football with University (the only District League side in the FFA Cup) hosting Leeton United who play in Wagga Wagga’s Pascoe Cup.

Luke McCann scored the Students opener two minutes in before Leeton scored two back-to-back through Mario Stern.

Doug Woodiwiss would net a double of his own to give Uni a 3-2 lead at the break and he would secure his hat trick early in the second half.

Leeton pulled a goal back but University would hold on for a 4-3 win to see them through to a third round clash with Gladesville Ravens.

Match 3 - Fairfield Bulls SC vs Wollongong United

Illawarra Premier League heavyweights Wollongong United visited Ninevah Stadium in Bonnyrigg to take on Fairfield Bulls. The match which began last Thursday was abandoned at halftime due to the bad weather with the score still at nil all.

United returned on Tuesday evening and the match was restarted from the beginning but the Bulls managed to hold them goalless for the opening half once more, however, a Shane Murray penalty early in the second half was followed by goals from Zac McLaren and new signing Naoki Ogawa secured a relatively comfortable 3-0 victory.

United will now host Old Barker FC in the third round.

Match 4 - Bankstown RSL Dragons FC vs Fernhill Foxes

The standout result came at Middletown Park in Yagoona on Thursday night with Illawarra Premier League side Fernhill Foxes knocked seven goals past Bankstown RSL Dragons to record a 7-1 win amidst torrential rain.

Two Foxes picked up hat tricks in the win in Jordan Hughes and Alex Rooke - though the records have Hughes scoring four to Rooke’s two.

New signing Jeremy Kemp scored Fernhill’s other goal and it was another new signing who netted the Dragons only goal with Robbie Watson putting the ball into his own net.

The Foxes will meet South Coast Flame in the next round.
