BELLAMBI OVERCOME STOUT STUDENTS

Bellambi continued their 100 per cent record in the Peoplecare District League with a 2-0 win over University at Elizabeth Park. Both sides went into the game yet to drop a point with University the top scorers in the league with 11 goals after just two games.

Inside three minutes Bellambi showed the first signs of what was to come with Ilija Prenzoski slicing a ball into the left-hand channel for Matt Richardson whose shot was parried away at the near post by Claude D’Alesso. Five minutes later, Bellambi threatened through Richardson again. A cross in from the right-hand-side found him unmarked but he couldn’t control his header.

In the 14th minute, University’s Nelson Mcleod pounced on a careless giveaway from Tim O’Brien but his shot wasn’t of much threat, finding the keeper’s hands. Five minutes later, Mcleod had another opportunity as a ball played over the top of the defence found him. Bellambi’s Valon Rizvani was quickly off the line to block the shot.

Bellambi’s first goal came in the 32nd minute as Ilija Prenzoski intercepted a poor pass out from the back and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Bellambi continued mounting pressure on the University defence and in the 36th minute, D’Alessio was forced into an important save as a looping header from Matt Passlack threatened to double the advantage. Two minutes later, D’Alessio was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. This was the last action of the half.

After a slow start to the second half, Bellambi again threatened. Ilija Prenzoski knocking the ball over the crossbar after Scott Muilwyk’s driven cross from the right-hand-side. Five minutes later, Bellambi had another chance as Richardson made in-roads into the box from the left-hand-side but was unable to find a teammate with his cutback being intercepted.

In the 83rd minute, Scott Chipperfield had the crowd off their feet as he lined one up from 20 yards. His left-footed shot had the keeper worried as it flashed past his left-hand post. Bellambi finally had their second in the 92nd minute when Todd Simpson received a pass from the left-hand-side and confidently buried the ball into the far corner.

Bellambi were in control throughout the game but University showed great defensive stability limiting Bellambi to just a few goalscoring chances despite playing the majority of the game with ten men.

Next up the Rosellas is an away match against Balgownie while the Students visit Shell Cove.
