Round 17 Results
Sydney University took on Macquarie University on Friday Night Football at Mahoney. Sydney University looked determined from the hooter and scored after two minutes showing their intent. This was to be the Bombers best quarter with 11 goals being scored. After the quarter time break Macquarie University wised up and defended a lot better to restrict the flow of goals especially the 3rd quarter where only five goals were scored. In the final quarter, Sydney University hopes of breaking the goal scoring record were put to a dash as they rushed through their kicks to score lots of behinds due to committed Macquarie University pressure. In the end Sydney University scored a good win 31.23.209 to Macquarie University 1.0.6. Best were Marie Keating with 9 or 10 goals, Una McKay, Mel Khoury while for the Warriors were Leah and Kim Woldhuis.
On Saturday Morning, the Bondi Shamrocks made the road trip to Wollongong University to play the Saints. The Shamrocks started off slow on the scoreboard and worked hard for little reward for the first three quarters despite dominating possession. The Saints although superior with plenty of reserves were unable to penetrate the Shamrocks defense for any goals although they had their chances. The Shamrocks were finally able to put their consolidated work together in the final quarter with four goals to win and finish off the 2010 season on a high. The end score was Bondi Shamrocks 7.8.50 to Wollongong Saints 0.3.3 - best for the Shamrocks were Carol Breen, Olivia Warren and Gillian Behan. For the Saints Katherine Gow was best for the brave side.
Up at Mahoney, Balmain accounted for the Southern Power 21.17.140 to 1.2.8. Highlight was Bee kicking 10 goals to break the century mark. Unfortunately no ground invasion was recorded for fears that their score would be wiped out - boo to tradition! In the words of Stephen Quartermain "People power hasn't spoken". That makes Bee on 102 goals for the season to effectively seal Golden Boot and set the new individual goal kicking record in both home and away season and the all season record of 98. After an 8 goal opening quarter the Power tightened up considerably only letting in 5 goals per quarter for the rest of the game. Best for the Dockers were Jackie Buckthought and Belinda Pride whilst for the Power was Louise Glasgow.
In the final game Easts took on Wests. The Western Wolves of old came back snarling today to hit out hard from the opening siren and controlled the game from then on over a brave Stingrays who were coming into the game with semifinal hopes. The Wolves may have been motivated by Emma "Junior" Brown's 50th SWAFL Game which is remarkable for her young age. Best for the Wolves were Amy Carpenter, Natalie Barber and Cynthia Dufaut while for the Stingrays were Renee Sochor, Deearne Hogan and Ciska Van Schalwyk. The end score was Western Wolves 98 - UNSW-Easts Stingrays 18.
With the results, Wests seal 4th place and cannot move in either direction. They are thus the AWAY Team in the minor semi-final to be held on 28 August. The Shamrocks are now 5th on the table with the Stingrays now 6th.
Round 18 Preview
Just a small reminder that there is a Federal Election held on August 21, please vote and save yourself the fine.
This is the last home and away round of the 2010 season. For the Macquarie University Warriors, Southern Power, UNSW-Easts Stingrays and Wollongong Saints, it's time to play your hearts out then you can commence your Mad Sunday Celebrations and think about the end of season footy trip!
On Friday Night Southern Power play Sydney University at Mahoney. The Power will be keen to inflict some damage on the 3rd placed Bombers before putting their feet up. The Bombers need to score about 200+ points on top of Newtown's game margin to bridge the gap if they are to leap to 2nd place.
On Saturday Morning, the UNSW-Easts Stingrays take on the Dockers. The Stingrays will be playing for pride in this match and seeing if they can take out 5th place. On the other hand the Dockers will be aiming to score their first ever undefeated Home and Away Season, so interesting times await.
The 1pm match sees Macquarie University Warriors take on the Newtown Breakaways. The Warriors will be keen to have some fun against the second placed Breakaways. They could hope that the Breakaways may be concentrating on the major semi-final instead of this week but somehow I feel the Breakaways want to have the momentum from the rest break.
The match between Wollongong and Wests originally at Mahoney at 1pm has now been moved to 12pm down the South Coast at North Dalton Park. The Saints with their youth girls may be looking for a good win to finish off their season but the Wolves look pretty hungry after last weeks effort and will be seeing if they can make it 2 weeks in a row.
Game Development
On Sunday, players from the Talented Player Program drove to Wollongong to watch the Illawarra Youth Girls Semi-Finals, they saw some exciting play and encouraged the girls to do their best and made sure that there was a future pathway for the young girls. Major thanks to Shellee Gibson, Lisa Roper, Liz Fassone, Leah Woldhuis, Jessica Colquhoun, Nadine Miller, Kate Lancaster and Lara Creber who also had the opportunity to meet Jo Grayson who is the manager of the TPP.
In the simultaneous games run at Figtree, 3rd placed Albion Park Crows smashed 4th placed Northern District Tigers 16.18.114 to 0.0.0 with NSW Under 18's player Loranna Child with 9 goals. The Tigers have to be commended on their 4th placed finish in their first year of Youth Girls and is definitely something to look forward to for next year.
In the major semifinal 2nd Shellharbour Swans triumphed over the 1st placed Figtree Kangaroos 3.7.25 to 2.2.14. This was the first time Figtree had lost a game in two years, so it was well done to the Swans with NSW Under 15s player Belinda Harvey scoring 2 goals. This means the Swans get the weekend off whilst the Kangaroos will play the Crows next Sunday also at Figtree at 3pm. The grand final is at Figtree Oval at 3pm on Sunday Aug 29, and i'm sure the girls will be delighted if you can show them any support.
Figtree Oval is located on Princes Highway next to Westfields.
SWAFL: We're standing up Australia for Female Football and moving forward! (I think i've managed political neutrality there).
P.S. You may not know but I am (hopefully) finishing my university studies in teaching and there is a chance I will not be in Sydney for 2011 as I look for a teaching placement. So to be fair to all I will be stepping down from all football positions at both Shamrocks and league level for 2011 until I sort out my future but if I could I would like to concentrate on Youth Girls/Schoolgirls Football in 2011.
So thus, if you would like to dream of being the next SWAFL Web Editor, put your hand up at the SWAFL AGM to be held in October 31 and the position is yours. Thanks to everyone on the committee starting from Jemma Still as SWAFL President who let me be in control two years ago continuing to the current President Ros McMahon-Bostick and most importantly to all you the readers for putting up with my idiosyncrasies, especially my poetry and music references. I think we've made this website punch above it's weight in terms of readers despite being one of the smaller women's leagues in Australia and we've tried our best to promote women's football where possible.
