The Southern Power AFC is pleased to announce Cheyne Anderson as the Women’s Team coach for the 2011 season. Cheyne will take over from outgoing coach Gary Slowgrove who has guided the team for the past few years. After coaching the Southern Power Third Grade side in 2010, Cheyne will move across to the Women’s team where he is excited about the challenges which await.
“I look forward to the challenge of coaching this diverse playing group where Ill be drawing on all my knowledge from my years of playing and coaching to unite the team, build a solid culture and help promote the game in the Shire.” Anderson said. “It’s an exciting time in women’s football with significant growth seen each year with more and more players and teams joining. This growth is no more evident than in our side which mixes a few seasoned veterans with many newcomers to the game along with juniors stepping up to senior football and I look forward to guiding them forward.”
Following a break over Christmas, pre-season training will resume on Tuesday 18th January from 6:15pm at Waratah Oval (Rawson Ave, Sutherland) and continue there every Tuesday and Thursday till the start of the season.
In facilities news, the Southern Power AFL Club has been awarded a grant of $12,500 under the State Government "NSW Community Building Partnership" where the club in conjunction with the Miranda Bombers JAFL Club has obtained support in building a new amenities building and upgrading the existing building at Lincoln Oval (Waratah Park), Sutherland.
This project will enable the Southern Power Senior AFL club and the Miranda Bombers Junior AFL club to jointly play out of Lincoln Oval. Southern Sydney is in need of a Regional AFL Facility and Lincoln Oval has been identified as a suitable venue, and this project will lay the foundations for this to occur.
Improved local facilities to be built include: 10 public toilets, 2 x senior size change rooms, 2 x club amenities rooms, store rooms and canteen.
This regional project will now proceed with funding secured by the users, the AFL and Council. This project will construct a Regional AFL facility that will develop and improve our local players whilst creating a safe, inclusive and healthy environment for the local community.
