Round Three of the Sydney Women’s AFL saw the competition relocate across the suburbs of Sydney. St George hosted their first home game against Wests at Olds Park, Easts took on Balmain at the picturesque Village Green and the grand final re match between Sydney Uni and Newtown was played out at Mahoney Park.
Wests travelled down to Mortdale undefeated to take on the Crows, and came out strongly in the first quarter, using the wind to their advantage to create a decent lead at the first break. The second quarter was a different story, with a defensive minded St George team holding them to one goal. The home team were tough all day, and deserved their goal in the fourth quarter, in which they managed to equal the scoring efforts of the current league leaders. In a hard fought contest, Wests came away with the win 9.14.68 to the Crows 1.0.6.
In the match at the UNSW, Easts had 14 new players on the paddock and looked ready to go after a solid warm up. It was always going to be a tough initiation to the game against the experienced Dockers, and despite battling hard for all four quarters and showing some great linking plays, Easts could only manage the one goal for the game.
Struggling to find kicking accuracy early, the Dockers forwards eventually honed their radars, booting 6 goals in quick succession in the final quarter to leave the final score Balmain Dockers 20. 24. 144 def. Easts / UNSW 1. 0. 6
The final match of the round was the match up of last year’s grand finalists, which Uni won in 2007 in a close contest. Again, Uni looked the favourites early on in this match, appearing to want the ball more than their red and white counterparts and making the most of their opportunities in the forward line. Newtown looked stunned through the first three quarters and were down 7 points leading into the final break.
Whatever the Breakaways coach said at three quarter time seemed to wake the Newtown girls, who then came out and showed they were a team to be reckoned with, kicking 6 goals straight to double Sydney Uni’s score. Final result Newtown 9.10.64 defeated Syd Uni 5.2.32.
This weekend’s matches sees all the games returning to the home of women’s AFL at Mahoney Park with Newtown playing Easts at 10am, Balmain up against St George at midday and Wests verse Sydney Uni at 2:00pm. Look forward to seeing you all down there.
