Dear All,
In response to the article that appeared on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald this morning, I thought I would put some more information on the website about what SWAFL are doing to secure a pathway for these girls to senior AFL.
Jason King (SWAFL Junior Development Officer) and myself have been working with NSW/ACT AFL towards creating a viable competition for this age group.
We have been granted $5000 to assist with preparation in 2008 and a junior carnival / skills clinic has been suggested. Plans are currently under way and this is likely to be scheduled in late August / early September.
We have also been in discussion with the AFL Development Officer in the Wollongong region and are aware of the limitations currently posed by these girls - something which is less than ideal and needs to be rectified.
This is a huge concern for the SWAFL committee, and parents of the girls playing through the age ranks who have little opportunity to progress once they hit the age of 14. It is also a concern for the NSW/ACT AFL who recognise the need to work with the SWAFL to create a viable option.
Please be assured there are plans in place and there is a lot of communication between all relevant parties at this current time to ensure these girls can keep enjoying the sport. These girls are potential stars of the future, and absolutely essential to the league and it's future - not only at the general competition level, but also at a representative level.
We are always looking for more volunteers to assist with this task and ask for any SWAFL players / supporters or fans, along with any interested parents, to make contact with the league if they would like to assist or need more information. Please send any correspondence to the following email address: sydneywomensafl@gmail.com.
Here's to women's footy and the future of the sport.
Regards,
Jemma Still
SWAFL President
