On a cold Saturday morning at Mahoney Oval, it was a triple-header that welcomed all six teams at Mahoney Oval.
In game one, league leaders Wests played fourth-placed Sydney University. Wests had only eighteen players whilst it seemed Sydney University had twenty-four, so it would be interesting to see if Wests stamina would last the four quarters whilst Sydney University had fresh reserves. In the first half, Sydney University had a majority of possession and position on the field but were unable to convert into points. However both sides were rather close at half time with Wests leading 1.2.8 to 0.4.4.
After a spray by coach Jason King, Wests hit the accelerator button and slammed goals in the second half to win 10.10.70 to 0.4.4. The scoreboard was probably not a true indication of the two sides but Sydney University would have been ruing their chances in the first half.
In game two, second-placed Balmain played fifth-placed St George. St George matched it up to Balmain up to half time but in the third quarter Balmain scored 10.1.61 to no answer by St George. From a St George point of view, it was rather crushing but from a football fan’s view, it was perfection personified. It seemed the Dockers had the Midas Touch in this quarter. In the final quarter St George tightened up but the damage was already done and the Dockers ran out winners 17.13.115 to 1.1.7
In game three, third-placed Newtown played sixth-placed Easts. Easts were consistently hard at the ball but Newtown’s class won the day led by their ruck to win 20.17.137 to 1.1.7.
Round 10 concludes two-thirds of the regular season and it seems that the teams are starting to define their playing style. Round 10 also introduces two night/twilight games with a Friday night game at Jubilee Oval between Balmain hosting Newtown and Easts hosting Wests at the Village Green on Saturday late afternoon. The last game sees St George hosting Sydney University at Olds Park No. 2 on Saturday morning.
