The second Illawarra Youth and Women's Development Gala Day will be held at Figtree Oval, Wollongong on Sunday, August 10 where many participants have been guranateed. It would be great if some existing SWAFL players could come along and demonstrate basic skills and encourage the new participants it would be fantastic. For a SWAFL perspective - we could either end up with new players or even an Illawarra-based team in the SWAFL competiton.
The first Illawarra Gala Day at Figtree Oval occurred on Sunday afternoon at Figtree Oval, Wollongong. Despite heavy rain and hail - 30 girls to ladies attended full of enthusiasm to participate in Australian Football. After a quick pep talk, the group was divided into under 16's and over 16's. The under 16's played a game whilst the over 16's did some handball drills, triangle kickout drill before playing a game. For many it was their first game and found the 360 degree aspect challenging before settling in and playing with much enthusiasm. With the rules being modified to ensure that all participants played in every position - there was multiple goal-scorers.
To get to Figtree Park, Figtree. Basically it's fairly easy to get to - if you've driven past McDonald's you've driven too far!
