On a very windy and cold Saturday morning the last triple-header for 2008 at Mahoney which affected your flu-riden correspondant.
In game one Sydney University took on St. George. Last time there was only one point in it between the two clubs. St George had been hit hard by the flu and effectively it was 16 on 18 however no excuses - St. George paid poorly and Sydney University punished any turnover mistakes hard. Final score Sydney University 8.10.58 to St. George 0.7.7. The best on ground was Annie Phillips (Sydney University).
Thanks to Sydney University for providing colour with their shockafrock outfits and their yummy sausages - thanks Kellie!
In game two Balmain played Newtown. Last time in Rd 10 - in Friday Night Lights (El Clasico I) Newtown had over-ran Balmain in the last quarter. With Balmain Coach Darren talking about some home truths to his team after their poor 2nd half last week and the obvious motivation for revenge - Balmain had a point to prove and let's just say they delivered it very well! From the opening bounce Balmain blitzed Newtown keeping them goal-less till the middle of the 3rd quarter. Belinda Pride (Dockers) was exceptional scoring 7 goals but footy is a team-game and the forward is just finishing off the team-work created downfield by the rest of the team. In the final quarter Newtown held their heads up to draw the quarter 4.1.25 each but it was too little - too late as the final score was Balmain 16.13.109 to Newtown 5.3.33.
In the final game Wests played Easts with both teams short at 16 players each. Wests had a simple tactic - kick it forward to their centre-half forward Marie Keating and let her do the work - and well let's just say she slammed 13 goals to break the old SWAFL record of 12. Marie's goals were all earnt the hard way usually involving a 30m run and multiple bounces of the ball and a beautiful finishing through the posts. Easts fought hard and earnt a consolation goal for their efforts in the 4th quarter. Final score Wests 20.14.134 to Easts 1.0.6
Rd 14 sees the last St. George match at Olds Park and two matches at Mahoney. The later Mahoney match sees the second placed Balmain Dockers taking on the undefeated Wests - it promises a juicy game to remember. Some say it could be the grand final preview - others argue I'm just speaking a bit too prematurely.
The more important question with Marie "Irish" Keating at 90-odd goals for the season and with two regular games to go - when will she break the 100 and who will lead the on-ground invasion a la Toyota - Tony Lockett ad???
