Virgo Shoots for Back to Back Titles

Global Product Search Meteorettes Assistant coach Mick Virgo has been been appointed to the Meteorettes top job for QBL season 2013.

The 48 year old school teacher was Wade Rebetzke's right hand man in the 2012 championship winning season and is relishing the opportunity of taking on the head coaching role.

"Wade has provided a solid foundation over the past three seasons so it's certainly the ideal time to step up to the challenge, " Virgo said.

QBL Committee Chair Ken Furdek said Mick's elevation was considered a "no brainer".

"Mick knows the system, is very knowledgeable, has played at the elite level and has developed a good rapport with the players," he said.

"It solidify's the women's program and creates an environment for Mick to put his stamp on the coaching role."

Furdek said "we are certainly glad that we could come to terms with Mick."

Virgo is no stranger to the QBL, having played for the Mackay Meteors in 1987,1988, 1991 and 1992. He's also coached several Capricornia and North Queensland school teams, in his duties as a secondary school Physical Education teacher.

"I enjoy coaching and have a real focus on developing our young talent," Virgo said.

Virgo is currently mentoring the Mackay Meteorettes Under 23 side alongside Global Product Search Meteorettes captain Fiona McGrath.

The team, which posted three wins in the opening tournament, heads to Townsville this weekend with the goal of securing the Tropical Youth League title.

Once that's completed, he'll then turn his attention to finalising his playing roster for the Global Product Search Meteorettes title defence of the QBL.

"There are a number of key players I am looking to re-sign, including star guard Jillian Haughton," Virgo said.
